New E Class - Specification

E Class being eaten alive? - not according to the sales figures. In 2012 the E Class sold 23594 units in the UK, making it the nest selling full size exec. 4,500 units ahead of the 5 series, 10,000 ahead of the A6 and over twice as many as the Jag XF. Thats with the dogs breakfast old model as well. Can only imagine the facelift car will do better still.

Trouble is I see so few. Walk round suburbia here and there are almost no W212s on the driveways. Drive about and it's rare to see a W212. Meanwhile BMW 5 Series ..... everywhere.

So the BMW 5 is as common as muck then ....
 
No - that accolade better goes with the 3 Series.

I think it's probably better expressed as "more popular".

Bit like MP3 is more popular than FLAC for music then ...

Personal choice means that nothing is truly better than anything else - just different.

Please don't go all supremacist about BMW simply because you have one coming.

I agree, I remember the uproar when the 212 images were released.
But seems many of those ended up buying one and are now moaning about the facelift!! :D

My mind is changing.

I'm sad to see the separate headlights going, but I did want the E Class to be a bit more macho, and that front end certainly is, in Sport mode.

The MB website shots look good.
 
Please don't go all supremacist about BMW simply because you have one coming.

You might have noted a post where I suggested that the fact that BMWs are supposed to be better to drive is an accepted truth that is just repeated to the extent that nobody questions it.

And I think I've stated that I wouldn't want a Z4 as a daily drive.

And if you want real irony you might remember a post a few months ago where I criticised BMW of telling its designers it wanted a 'me too' for the CLS.

So hardly supremacist (yet :devil:).
 
Personally there's only 1 BMW that I would buy, the S1000RR.

Their cars, I like them, no disputing they make quality cars, just I'm not keen on their interiors, I prefer the C/E Class looks wise to the 3/5 Series too, like the 6 Series and X5 though.

My brothers brand new 1 Series has rusty seat frames - a known problem as BMW decided not to paint them !!!

I think they are all pretty nice interior wise.
 
I dont know why but Im just not a fan of the newer BMW interiors, I think it may have been the irritating experience I had with using I drive in an E60 5 Series that put me off, looks wise I prefer both the E Class and Audi interior too, my favourite 5 Series looks wise is still the E39.
 
Nice dahses, the BMW IMHO looks the best, then the Audis then the Mercs for design. Colour wise, I'd have brown or black with the black wood and black headlining. The beige is something my late grandfather would choose.

In one review of a MB I came across recently the reviewer I enthuses about the styling of current MB dials on the dash. I don't really like them.

So who's right? The designers presumably can't please everyone.

I suspect that my dislike of some of the newer interiors is in part founded on my disproportionate like of the previous ones from the W211 E and W219 CLS.

I liked the dials more in my present car, but preferred the design and materials used in my previous car.

As interiors go, the 211 and 219 are triumphs that are hard to better. I can see as a 211 driver why you like the newer interiors in the BMW offerings over the W212 and 204 series, but the dials rule!!!!

I think that's the nub of it.

When it comes to car interiors, different people prefer different things. I can (sort of) see why some people swoon about BMW and Audi interiors, but I prefer the simplicity of the slabbier Mercedes designs. To me the BMW and Audi interiors just seem too contrived with their plethora of intersecting swoopy curves. That doesn't make anyone else's preferences less valid though.
 
These were exactly my choices.

BMW 520dSE Touring
Audi A6 2.0TDi Estate
Mercedes E220Cdi Se Estate

Having had 3 years with an Audi, much as I love it...... I wanted a change so that discarded the Audi.

Between the BMW and the Mercedes, in the end the Mercedes won...... but it was close. The Merc interior, compared to the BMW5 is actually rather bland and unfussed, which in the end was what swung it for us. We found the BMW interior to be quiet fussy and busy. What I needed was a relaxing place to be, to munch the miles up and arrive cool calm and unstressed.

Merc won, on order........... can't wait.

That';s not to say that the others weren't very nice, because they were!
