VW Touareg. Facelift E220 estate on order
Good morning everyone. Been lurkng around a couple of weeks and reading with particular interest the different opinions on the new 2014 faceifted E Class. It did remind me a bit of my old '96 Ford Scorpio but the I quite liked that at the time because it dared to be different. Anyway after getting a great deal on a 220cdi estate I placed an order for delivery mid May. I suppose I fit into the category of being one of those people who lease their cars because they can't afford to buy their own and who reduce the exclusivity of the marque :D Fact is that I have been Contract hiring my vehicles for years now, started when I was self emlpoyed and VAT reg'd , but now as an employee with a mileage allowance it still makes sense to me. I never like to keep my cars more than a couple of years so it suits me financially and as I become bored easily, I know the next choice isn't too far away. I got a 3 + 23 payment, 15K per year deal for £375 INCL. VAT. Combined, my total outlay for the 2 years will be under £10K. I'm quite sure the depreciation would be more than that, so I am perfectly happy NOT to own it and have that concern. It will be kept for personal use, as I happily do most my business miles in my Suzuki Swift . I've added a towbar and reversing camera to the package but apart from that it's got everything on it that I need...and some, so I'm now looking forward to my first MB experience. Cheers, Kev

I'm waiting for delivery of my E220Cdi Estate on Tuesday, but mine will be the 2012 model (new stock on a 13 plate) not the new 2014 model. Be interesting to see how the two stack up.

Towbar, been through the mill with this on mine. Retro fitting bar not the easiest but its being done on Thursday.

With your factory fit bar, what are you planning to tow with it? You do know that it will be need about £350 of mods if you want to tow a UK spec caravan? If trailer only, then it will be fine.

I play in a band so tow a braked two-axle box trailer weighing around 1650kg. I'm assuming that it comes with a standard 6 pin plug. My current Touareg came with a 13 pin so I had to get an adapter. Is this the mod that you mean is needed for UK caravans ?

Welcome Kev and £10k to drive 45k miles in a new E class seems a good price too me. Too good actually

30K Steve, it's a 2 year deal, (3 monthly payments as deposit + 23 further payments) but I think the 3 year was similar monthly rental. £10K would have been too good over 3 years ;)

It will come with a 13pin Euro socket as standard, so you will need to plug in a converter (like you did with the Tow-Rag)

you'll be fine towing a trailer. For the caravan the fridge run and charging circuits are missing which means an expensive mod........ which you won't need!

Ah OK , thanks for that. Got the converter already.

Came home this evening in the snow and got held up behnd two cars stuck on the hill sliding all over the place. C Class estate and an E class coupe...Oh what have I done, was it a sign ???...Can live without a 4x4 ?

Tip. The converter centre has to rotate to allow it to connect to the pins. Give it a squirt of WD40 every once in a while to keep it moving, especially if you are a light user of it.

If you don't, it can seize, so when you plug it in, it cross connects and blows all the fuses.

Ask me how I know, go on..... ask.............!!!

Haha..I don't think I need too. I blew a tail and brake light on the Toe Rag doing exactly that !! :thumb:

ah, ok........... thought it was just me!

When it blew the fuses, once I replaced them it still didn't work. Computer realised something was wrong an shut the towbar wiring down, so had to go to the dealer to be reset.
