New E350 Diesel reduced power from 265 to 252?

Did I read the spec right? They look to have reduced the power on the big Diesel (or am I comparing PS to HP?). iirc. 265 ps is 262 bhp.

As I understand it, yes. It's also the BlueTec model which means Adblu...

So much for catching up with BMW/Audi with a new twin turbo 3.0L.

Hmm.. just bought the first Audi for my wife - collect on Saturday. Technologically it specs up better than MB. Interior finish is better than MB. Quattro is a plus, and engines are better. The only thing holding me back on the A6 compared to the E estate is that the A6 load space is not flat with the seats down. In all other respects, IMHO, the A6 Quattro,bi-turbo is streets ahead of the E now. No wonder MB are having to discount so much.

252bhp is on par with Audis single turbo 3litre and BMWs single turbo 3litre and prices are about the same.

I'm not seeing the issue?

It's a rounding error level difference that will make precisely no difference in anything other than absolutely flat out autobahn driving.

The issue is that there appears a growing gap between the 'normal' range and the AMG 63. The AMG engines are increasingly powerful, and the rest of the range are reducing. 18 months ago you could buy a 500 petrol, a 350 petrol, and a fairly sporty 350 diesel (with the option of the Brabus box). Now there is a gap of about 300hp between the largest 'normal' model and the AMG. I actually want a largish estate with approx 300-350hp on tap. MB no longer offer this, whereas the other 2 do. For everyday driving I don't want a 63. I'm very happy with what I have now, but come the time when I change it in 2-3 years, with the current engine line-up, I won't be driving an MB any more. And I think I am not alone..

It also drives better as well.

It is more foucsed and more comfy than the E Class, it is more comfy than the 5 series and very, very close dynamically as well.

Out of the big three German brands I would take a 3.0tdi S-Line bi-turbo over the big three, an Alpina D5 Touring would be my perfect car right night, but the A6 does everything so well it is the winner for me.
I would take a 245bhp s-tronic Quattro A6 avant over the Merc and BMW to be fair.
Problem with the Audi A6 is price, I was looking at £70,000 for a fairly decent specced bi-turbo, £45,000 for a 345ps one which is OK, same as E350 and 530d, but buying them a year old it was £28k for the Merc and the same for the BMW.
I am sure when the Audi has been out a while longer the used prices will soften a bit.

252 vs 265 makes no difference imho, different fuel will make more difference.

Interesting given the way Audi sling the engine over the front relative to BMW and merc. Doesn't the BMW need to active drive option to come alive? Not driven one but I'm sure a 530 would be a nice steer regardless as would ab E350 once the seats and overly light steering were fixed.

Surprised re the Audi but quality costs and given it costs more it should be better. I saw one the other day and thought for the 1st time, I could drive that...

Just curious, why do you need 350 bhp "for everyday driving"?

I don't need 350 HP for everyday, and didn't say that. I wrote that I want an everyday car with 300-350, and that's because occasionally I like the grunt to be able to get up to speed quickly (be that overtaking, on a slip road, driving down an autobahn, or just having a bit of fun to alleviate the boredom). It's personal choice.

loads of unsold A6 Avants around .. must be able to get great deals on them.

but perhaps not on the bi-turbo diesel

I think the A6 Avant is very elegant, and one of best Audis out there; not over designed, not boxy, and very contemporary.

The interior is utterly stunning too .. flowing, substantial and not in your face.

Problem is, most are FWD 2 litre, the 2 litre I can live with, the FWD would annoy me after the honeymoon period had worn off.
Also, the mpg on the 2 litre multi is appauling, I struggled to get past 33mpg.

I'd only go Audi for the Quattro, but the extra Diesel power is a winner too.

The Ultimate (for me) is the BMW 550 Diesel Estate in 4WD! :D

Not sumat we will see in the UK due to RHD manufacturing costs. :wallbash:

I would be more bothered by having to use AdBlue than the 10 odd BHP power drop.

Its stored in a small reservoir in the boot. It's easily topped up and done for you at service time.

Its not a big deal.

The ML I had on loan had a filler for it in the same area as the fuel filler, I've read about some cars getting through it before services have been due, plus it is an added expense at service time, I don't know why they've bothered with it, they should at least keep the Blue Efficiency version going too.

It helps clean down emissions etc for tough EU legistlation.

You can buy top up solutions for it. I think its quite a reliable system, trucks being using it for years.

Think of the children it will save. Surely losing the horsepower for extra clean emissions makes your inner soul feel good ;)

I could have ordered "blue performance" option for my 3er. Assume that as I didnt I'm a baby killer now?

No HP drop on BMW's just a big drop in Nox. Which has no tax implication.

I don't think the NOx emissions from a diesel passanger car are a major issue but NOx as an emission is more immediately hazardous to health than CO2
