Hardly surprising though - if it's right that we (humankind) are responsible for climate change through emissions, then legislated change is the only way it will work.

I posted a link about this a while back (but can't find it at the mo) relating to Game Theory. It says basically that although we all (may) buy into the end game, we each reason the impact we individually can make is so small and that we don't have to play the game. This results things being taxed, charged or legislated against.

So, for example, I drive to the office in London.....I reason that the train is unreliable and inflexible, I hate people first thing in the morning, I find the car more comfortable. The impact that my car makes individually is so small that I might as well do it - and so we have congestion charging.

So the same here - yes, we must all take seriously fuel economy, emissions, etc, very seriously but my big-engined behemoth won't make the slightest bit of difference. It works the same at the corporate level (and at the market level too - the selfish aspect behind the theory has a much wider base than the altuistic, so where do I aim my products?).

California looks at outlawing incandescent lighting - I can see the reasons behind that, but it doesn't work in my bathroom (or so Mrs E says)....

So unless we are willing to take individual, and altruistic, responsibility for our actions we'll have to get used to more of this in the future unfortunately.

Mrs Bonzo and I have the same discussion. I cannot fault her logic, she just says 'No'. Let us know if you find a solution.

I propose an 18% reduction in the amount of people working for the European Commission/government/tax fleecing scum.

See that word average & also not that 'Smart' appear several times in that list....

How long before 'Smart' becomes 'Merc'???

Or am I being a cynic??

As I live in a town with a large Commission presence it does cross my mind now and again what they all do, other than spend a long time on translation perhaps. It seems that they do a pretty poor job in the PR area and whereas I am solidly pro European (different argument but not on this thread please). I also know quite a few of teh employees and I would suggets that it might be a little hard to refer to them all as scum. Nevertheless one good PR move would be to reduce numbers and concentrate on the essentials of easing standards and trade in Europe

What's the problem? I have two light bright bathrooms and not an incandescent lamp between them.
As long as the lumen output is right and the type of fittings correct the room will be light enough.

I don't think it's going to be that difficult to be honest. We're only talking about the average car emissions...around 160(ish) now. Technology, science and the attitude towards the powerful oil companies will all help in the future. BMW has the hydro powered 7-series for 80k. It can be done, it'll just take time and money.

Once the motorist is taken up to the limit (soon), the government attention will turn to other things...I bet homes are ready for an eco tax. Big house? Big emissions! Funny how a big car is now frowned upon, a big house is admired.

Future: new-build flimsy flats with a supermini parked outside.... mmmm, inspiring.
