I will go with that too :D

You must have one hell of a big garage
Welcome aboard :bannana:

How do you decide what to drive each day  :D :D

My choice is simple - me - edna - go :D :D

Corr blimey - you weren't joking!!??

Do you have them all on a trade insurance policy, or do you have policies for each car?

Welcome to the forum too!!

trade policy of course. i change my cars more than my pants. if its a dry day and i want to play i take out the Gti golf. the e220 is for taking the bird to the cinema, the E30 is ideal for dragging the dofgs around and the yanks just sit and appreciate. i take them all over the Uk during the show season
i have an alfa 155 thats been breathed on but its so delicate and badly made that im scared to drive it incase it goes wrong the golf has just had a diy restoration and its looking like new. not worth very much but great practice, and its the 230 next

Hi Dan , welcome to the forum .

Your car , 1975 , on an 'R' plate would have been one of the last made before the 'New Generation' 114/115 series were replaced by the 123 series .

Don't know if you took your 'user name' from this particular car , but the 4-cylinder models of this series 200(D),220(D),230,240D were designated W115 and the six cylinder ones 250,280,280E were the W114 series .

These were very well engineered cars and much better to drive than the 123 series (which was very 'soft' having been developed for the American market) , having a tauter more well controlled suspension set up , more like the 124 series . The one achilles' heel of those cars , as I am sure you are aware is RUST - sills killed many an otherwise good looking car off , as did rust inside the rear wheelarches and front inner wings just below the bonnet hinges .

You can get a great many parts from specialists in Germany such as

DB Depot

http://www.dbdepot.de/englisch/index.html

or

SLS

http://www.sls-hh-catalogue.de/start/faq.phtml?lan=2

or

Niemoller

http://www.niemoeller.de/englisch/index.html

There is also an excellent website (in German) devoted to these models and run by the German Strich Acht (Stroke Eight) Club .

http://www.strichachtclub.de/c_aktuelles/c_aktuelles_neuigkeiten.php

Hope all of this is of some help to you .

Good luck with the restoration .

Derek.

Hope this is of help .

wow derek really appreciate you taking the time to explain all that to me. i had been told the car was a 114 but couldnt find the diffrences between to two. i assume they share many parts? this car has the usual rust in the wings but the sills are good. a adore older cars and although these are almost worthless (ive seen a minter on ebay for 1200 quid) it took my fancy, i had to get one. and for 150 quid i could always part it out at the very worst and get my money back...

oh and i really should have gone with w115-Dan or buy a third merc..

Dan , the cars really only differ mechanically .

There was a 'facelift' around 1973 when the bonnet line was lowered , quarterlights in the front doors were done away with and the 'chin' under the front bumper was changed . The rear lights also changed from smooth to the 'ribbed' ones that were designed to be kept clean by the airflow . The 'Fintail' style steering wheel gave way to the more modern one your car will have , which is not so different to the W116 , W123 or W201 wheels .

Late cars often tended to have the very expensive (£300+ EACH!) Fuchs or 'Baroque' alloy wheels as seen on the n/s/f of your car . M-B recently had a limited production run of these wheels available through the Oldtimer Center.

I think Eurocarparts also have a limited number of spares for these cars - not listed in their general catalogue , but if you go in the guys can look them up .

not quite true

w115 and w114 chassis are identical - the fronts are diffrent, specifically the bonnet, under bumper plate, wings. The 115 has a shorter wing, and shorter bonnet (by 1 inch roughly) and always did. Its not an age thing. The 115 is indeed the 4 and 5 cylinder cars, the 114 the 6.

In 73ish (i thought it was 74 or 75 - but hey)they changed the quater lights etc - but the old and new doors are interchangeable (I have 'new' doors, and 'old' windows - the bolt holes are identical)
