New iPod connection

Really? I haven't got a CD player hooked up, but that surprises me. I'd go as far as to say that has to be wrong. It's cold outside and my manual is in the car ;) , so can you confirm (or deny) that Steve?

Dension's site is down, so I can't look into it more, but it does seem pricey if you can't display the track details on comand. May as well just go through the AUX-IN port. I realise the icelink gives you control of the iPod, but if you still have to look down to the iPod to see the track details ...

Love that press release wording. I don't drive a car; I drive a mechanically-propelled enclosed-body vehicle :D

I'm wrong; it doesn't support CD-Text. You have to name each CD and Track individually on COMAND.

Surely that's not the case with the new version of COMAND?

£200 With The Exchange Rate Seems A Bargain To Me,would Anyone Be Interested In A Bulk Buy

This bit of kit actualy *replaces* your current MB CD changer if you have one. The software itself emulates the MB CD changer, which means you can control the ipod with the steering wheel buttons etc, just like the CD Changer.

At the moment it only supports CD text, which means you would have to input the names via COMAND, however next year will see a firmware upgrade to the iPod itself which will allow full names/titles to be displayed directly onto the COMAND and dashboard screen which will be cool.

I think for the functionality its a bargain, full intergration with your MB, only downside is loosing the CD changer.

PS. This unit only works in D2B fibre optic enabled Mercedes, and wont work in 2004 - 2005 E, S and CL as these cars use the MOST fibre network.

Suddenly this unit doesn't sound like a waste of time any more! I don't have a cd-changer yet so this would be very useful :)

I'm sure most members would prefere to have the ipod with 1000+ songs instead of the changer..i presume this unit would work with the w203 c class"advise from techies"

From the sounds of it, it will work with any of the comand units except those that use a DVD for navigation (the very latest models).

Also works with any Mercedes with the Audio 10, 30 and APS 50 units from 2000 onwards from memory.

I've heard that people who dont have CD changers may have to get the stealers to tell your car it does have a CD changer fitted (via the Star Diagnostic machine) as the D2B bus wont recognise this bit of kit, however most dealers will do this for you at little or no charge.

This does look interesting, however the initial outlay plus the cost of an Ipod is quite steep.

Let me get this right. The iPod and the fancy bit of kit mentioned here means you can play MP3 tracks through the CD based COMAND unit and can control the tracks with the steering wheel controls ? Then later on it's possibe to display the track and album details ? If so..... :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

Yes, thats right! :D

I very very nearly ordered an iPod and Bose Sound Dock system from their website just now, as they are offering 4 months interest free which is also very tempting.........

This on the face of it looks almost perfect for me but then you remember it doesn't yet work in the 2005 model SL. However, having looked at the Dension website it says they aim for MOST fibre integration in Q2 2005 so this might just do it.

I personally wouldn't use an iPOD if it has to be on display in the car (and not hidden in the glovebox) as it's too distracting with the small poor display. Without CD text integration I think it's a liability. I tried it once using the AUX port in my 2004 CLK 500 and it was a painful with all the wires and having to use the buttons on the iPOD to control the music.

This, however, when it supports MOST could be perfect as the new DVD COMAND supports CD text.

I've just ordered the iPOD online (not one shop had them in stock) and will be ordering the iceLink next week.

I'm planning to stick the iPOD in the glove box probably fastened down with velcro.

Is it then an easy job to take the COMAND unit out to fit a link ?

Is this a stealer job ? (sorry can't be bothered trawling through the posts).

(I bet Shude could do this for me for a few pristine £20 notes :D )

Also announced this week, for people who have Pioneer head units:
January 4, 2005 - Pioneer Electronics today announced a direct-connect auto adapter to play songs from an iPod through the company's car stereos. "Through Pioneer's IP-Bus system, the CD-IB100 is backwards compatible with more than 3 million Pioneer car stereos sold during the past several years. Users will be able to operate their iPods as easily as they would using the stereo unit, by means of the stereo's front panel controls. Pioneer stereos will display up to eight characters of text including album, artist and song names, with the ability to scroll additional information." The CD-IB100 adapter will be available in March for US$140.
