New member and E63S owner

Yeah I had PS4S's on my C63S (first thing I swapped after getting it) - cannot wait to put them on this car, but can't justify the cost at the moment.
I have PS4S’s on mine, they have been embarrassingly “skippy” in the cooler weather… great when progressing but in slow turns, awful.

Its the geometry that causes that....the Ackermann effect.........not the tyres. Changing the tyres may well hide it....and you might not hear it....but it will still be there and will probably reoccur at a different temp, on a different surface or as the tyres wear down.

E46 m3 csl , thats the pinnacle of M3 ownership. What was your reason to let that besst go, lack of radio? I got myself an e93 m3 DCT in February to blow dry my hair around in. Had an e46m3 till 2019 and e46 330 before that and 645ci. The e9x is a very nice car, the gearbox is very decent for an old car and the v8 sings nicely

I honestly think that the E92 M3 is a better car than the CSL ... it sounds better and personally, I just felt its handling was superior. Then there's the V8 ... S54 is an amazing engine but a wound up S65 beats it. My CSL had a Supersprint exhaust ... I know its all about induction but the exhaust just gave the car an enhanced sound without being too loud. The E92 had a 1.5 exhaust mod .... again, subtle sounding.

I've never had an issue with the gearboxes, SMG or DCT .... IMO they were part of the cars character ... BMW manuals are hardly the best in class.

In reality, I doubt many CSL's were spec'd from the factory without a radio or aircon .. .thankfully mine had both :)

PS4S or PS4?

Pilot Sport 4 S have an exceptionally broad operating temperature range for an ultra high performance tyre but they will still skip in cold conditions. Everything that makes them exceptionally - no ridiculously - good for a road tyre means that they are flawed in cold conditions.

I’ve had a set of PS4S fail prematurely, whereby the tread blocks started to separate from the tyre. I suspect that may have been caused by using them all year round, including very cold conditions. I’ve previously said that it wouldn’t have put me off buying another set, but I haven’t yet!

It is the geometry, but all tyres will skip, but comfort orientated tyres with corresponding width, diameter, aspect ratio and sidewall stiffness simply flex and absorb the lateral forces avoiding skip. Tyres which aren’t sensible can’t.

Unfortunately relatively ordinary modern cars have ultra high performance tyres as the motoring press donnt rate cars which don’t feel sharp, and tyre manufacturers don’t make comfort tyres in the silly sizes required by stylists.

Years ago, only ultra high performance cars were fitted with ultra high performance tyres and these were typically either (1) not used in cold conditions, or (2) the driver understood the limitations, or (3) the driver fitted winter tyres.

Now we have people with ordinary cars, using their car all year round, who expects tyres to defeat the laws of physics and perform without compromise at all extremes, and doesn’t believe that winter tyres are required (in the UK).

Cars with greater negative camber - mostly performance cars and cars set up for stability, like most Mercedes models - suffer with skip more than others, because the camber is intended to resist lateral load for handling surety and performance.

You could test it by putting silly size wheels and ultra high performance tyres on any model which “never” skips, and then drive it at low speeds in low temperatures, and it will skip. The lateral forces have to go somewhere.

My wife's A Class W169 skips badly on multi storey type shiny floors... and that's with here balloon like tyres!

I got used to that a good while ago now, doesn’t really bother me. If the compromise for excellent handling in good conditions is skipping in cold conditions, I’m all for it!

I am getting used to it.. most of my driving is out of town, open road. Pulling out of our drive onto the road is the most noticeable and off putting, and really noticeable if someone has parked in the no parking bay opposite.

@Bobby Dazzler, you have me wondering now, 4 or 4S ?. I will have a look later..

At work my colleague keeps his CSL in some very expensive storage and takes it out once every few months. It has less than 20k miles, hopefully he's got a valuable investment. I wanted a v10 M6 but the smg put me off and the E9x DCT is a step up vs smg2 + I'm sick of huge cars so the M3 was what went for albeit 2 less cylinders. I'm not huge fan of the rubbery Manual gearboxes either but was actually very tempted to get a manual but hoped my wife would drive this car so the DCT was a compromise + probably better for commuting. She's not driven it to date 🤣
I think what I hated about the e46 was the chicken neck smg gear changes, the steering on the motorway and the brakes, but on a good B road, what a car. The 330 was a better daily. I had MPS4s fitted to my e46 m3 and it felt like a posh go-kart. The e93 is much better on the motorway, has some weird off centre geometry at low speed but otherwise nice and accurate. Also the exhaust has a lot of rasp at low revs, I wonder it's been modded, will find out when it gets serviced in December hopefully. I don't think I'd pick the e46 over the e9x either, the latter is a much more complete car and even though there's hardly any torque, it still goes

I can see me getting another E92 at some point, although we're hopefully moving to Spain at the end of 2025/start of 2026 so toys are on hold .... cars over there are also v expensive so I think it will cost me 40k euro to get a E92 M3:( E63S will be 100k euro ... unless export/import this one. I can see the draw to owning a V10 .... an SMG E60 M5 might even be higher up the want list than an E92.

Have you had the geo done on the E92? I had mine sorted after I had Eibach springs fitted ... the car felt so well balanced, was probably the single best modification I made to that car.

Damn those eu costs are crazy aren't they ? Jeez.
Personally I've decided i'd go M6 rather than M5 unless 4 doors is a must. I think its slightly ( v10 )higher up on my wishlist than the V12 amg engine. Former is sporty enjoyment , latter is mad S class luxury but in quite a huge car which I'm not so keen on.
I haven't had the geo done on the m3, just replaced the infotainment , android auto, reversing camera etc The induction sound of the S65 is superb. Once it gets it's service done , I'll see what to do next or whether to try something else. (Maybe E64 M6 ie convertible - easier sell with the mrs )

Overall though while I thought it's nice and loud in the cabin, my mate's 2024 911 porsche is much louder in the cabin. I couldn't believe it. How'd they get away with that with all the noise regs etc
Since I got my 6.2l w212 e63, tell you what, apart from its huge size, it's giving me serious smiles per gallon. It's got hydraulic steering, good gearbox, the engine orchestra from the front is divine and the handling is impressive. The torque at any revs is impressive and it has no turbos. I just need to put proper tyres on the front, its got MPS4 rather than 4S and since the weather started getting colder, the front struggles to point straight , I enjoy the tail wagging but not the front end , I'll get wheel tracking done just to be safe but better tyres are high up on the list

Its hard to believe on this day and age that cars had 6.2l engines 😄 I remember the day I went along with a mate to collect his new W204 C63 ... like you say, torque at any revs😍

Lovely cars ! If i wasn't in the SL camp i would certainly be looking at the *63 range

Didn't Mercedes make an SL600 with a 7.2L engine?? Sure i read about it somewhere on here ....

I do have the 4S tyres on my E63.. just learn to live with it then… and learn to avoid the “skippy” situations if I can.

Quick question - where did you get the geo done on your E92? I'm going to get mine done soon
Bonus Q - how's it going with the E63

I had it done by a company called Track Torque in Tockwith near York.

Going well thanks, battery draining when not used often (2 or 3 drives a week) but had it on the C-Tek and is ok now. Saw an indicated 26mpg on the work commute last Friday! :p

That happened to mine too (2018 car) - bought a CTEK myself, but turned out to be the main battery being EoL.

Lifespan of 5 years is about what you’ll get, so worth getting it tested.

Spoke too soon, battery warning appeared again just after I posted this, so back on the CTek. :-( Thanks for the info, will get it tested as yes it will be 5 years old.
