C220 Sport 125
Have had the C220 a couple of weeks now and so have had time to get familiar with the car. Initial impression was very good and this has continued. I really like the look of the car. This was important to me as it’s the first 4 door saloon I’ve ever bought as I have always associated them with past company cars where there wasn't much choice.

Spec.
Having decided on the Sport 125 (Auto) model with Command the standard spec is very good so there was not much we wanted to add. Kept it simple and went for the obsidian black metallic, black leather, heated seats and chose the 7 spoke (18”) alloys.

Drive.
Very impressed. The auto box works really well. It’s been in ‘eco’ mode mostly as I’ve got used to the start/stop system. The ‘HOLD’ feature is very good and negates the requirement for using the silly handbrake other than when parked up.
Have also used manual shift with the gearstick and the paddle shift and both are easy to use, but unless I’m playing about I’ll leave the auto box to it. There is no significant lag when setting off and no hunting for gears which I’m pleased about as I’ve suffered with both of those in previous autos I’ve driven regularly. One being the (W203?) C220 Avantgarde Estate.
Ride is a good compromise of comfort, but with an edge you would expect with a ‘Sport’ model. It feels well planted and gives confidence when pushing on. The steering feels light at first, but firms up with speed and it’s a system I’ve liked more as I’ve driven the car.
Parking is made easy with the parktronic. Being used to the BMW system (f&r sensors) I like the Merc system better. The visible lights and warning beep on red is a good system. The BMW system is just a beep which gets louder and can sometimes be as distracting as it is helpful.

Cabin.
Nice place to be. The leather feels quality and the command adds to that. Steering wheel is a nice size and the seat adjustment is very good – affording easy adjustment to my ideal position, which is handy as my wife will also occasionally drive the car.
The command system and linguatronics work well and are straightforward to set up. Pairing my iphone took seconds and the fact Mercedes supplied leads in the car so phones can be plugged in and used as a media centre (and charged from the car) is a big plus. I haven't been able to connect the iphone up for command online (internet) but I believe thats a common problem due to the bluetooth spec and something Merc are hoping to resolve next year. I'm not bothered as I really don't see any benefit of stopping the car to use a slower browser than the iphone has over 3G anyway.
The sat nav is upto date and dynamic mode with TMC warns you of traffic jams and gives you the option to route around them. The split screen with map/road position when approaching route changes is helpful.
The heated seats do as they should and also automatically reduce temp from full (8 mins) to medium (10 mins) to low (20 mins) which again is a plus over BMW which rely on manual adjustment which you tend to forget until you feel like you have had a vindaloo!
Have set the lights to auto with main beam on auto and then tested the system on main roads and back roads and it works well. Takes a little getting used to as you have to ignore the temptation to put main beam on and let the car do it which seems to happen a fraction later than you would do manually but it works.
Other features like cruise, folding mirrors, total closure etc. all work as they should. I’ve set the alarm to beep when locked/unlocked but thats a personal preference. I’ve also got the car recognising speed limit signs and advising which seems a bit gimmicky but may prove handy.

Economy.
Business and personal life this month have meant I’ve not been able to do anything like the mileage I expected so far. Its had one run (app. 250 miles) which showed 47mpg average. This was motorways and a/b roads. The rest of the mileage has been local start/stop a few miles at a time which has been late 20’s early 30’s. I’m really not too bothered about economy so just want a yardstick from the first couple of tanks but I’ve seen enough to know it will be fine.

The older silver C220 which is parked behind mine in the pics and next up for a clean is my Dads. He has owned it from new and will not replace it. He loves the car so I help him keep on top of the cleaning side and a local indi maintains it. The following pic was taken earlier in the year but the car cleans up the same every time. It always looks pristine:

Nice write up Kingy, thanks for sharing. I get mine in 10 days, can't wait!!

Very nice! The older C-class looks impressive as well!

Cheers. Given that the C220 is a quick car yours will be like a rocket ship! If you are anything like me you will be counting the days and then the hours to getting it! :thumb:

Great write-up and very informative, thank you for posting.
Thanks mate.

love the wheels .. really suit the car
Ta! I really like them. I like the way they keep the car a bit understated. They are also very easy to clean which was an added bonus I'd not considered. :D

It is isn't it. My Dad loves it. It was a model a local Merc dealer got in as a demo car so is well specced. He went looking just after it had been cleaned up for the showroom and told them he wanted to buy it. He had a Landrover Discovery (HSE?) with twin roofs, twin aircon etc. Lovely car and only a couple of years old but he couldn't get on with it. Merc offered him a far better trade in price than Landrover were against a Range Rover they were trying to convince him he wanted. He picked the Merc up the following weekend. It's now over 11 years old and still cleans up like new. It drives really well too. He's looked after it, but thats been helped by the fact that other than the odd niggly (common) fault it's never let him down and never needed big money spending on it. I've tried to buy it off him a few times but he just doesn't want to sell/change it! Will have to see if being around the new C220 changes his mind. (Doubt it! ;))

Yep, I'm just like you. Dealer is getting the car Thursday. Then I get it on the 1st. :bannana:

Get a pic or two up when you have had chance to get to know the car a bit. Look forward to hearing how impressed with it you are and what a flying machine it is! :D

Just another update on C220 ownership. Have now done a few long trips - including the first of a few (this month) return runs to Heathrow (400 mile round trip). I'm more impressed with the car each time I drive it.

Average mpg on the last Heathrow trip (without trying) was 54mpg. I've paid little attention to mpg, instead enjoying the car and the way it drives but I'm very happy with that kind of figure so will continue to just take economy for granted.

The car spends a lot of time in default eco mode which is fine, but it's fun switching to sport and playing about when the road and my mood are right for it. I'm very happy with the balance of performance, comfort and economy and think I'll enjoy the car more and more.

I'm hugely impressed with the command system. The linguatronic is excellent and make phone calls on the move very convenient - moreso that the factory bluetooth in the BMW we have which until now I thought was a great peice of kit.
Connecting both our phones to the system was very easy and I'm pleased that the command recognises the phone(s) without issue and just gets on with it.

I've been out to customers and been thankful for the sat nav element. I always check my route before I set off so only tend to need sat nav as I'm getting near my destination in areas I'm not familiar with. It's been very good and the clarity of instructions has been helpful.
Apologies for the blurred images but my (young) son took them ...

The Speed limit notification on bottom left of the pics (which also flashes up on the speedo display when limit changes) is another handy feature. The sat nav lady is jabbering telling me which way to go, but like the wife I tend to ignore her (white noise!) and just glance at the screen when I need a bit of help. ;)
I've learnt to really appreciate the amount of kit (auto box, intelligent lights, auto wipers, linguatronic, brake 'hold', stop start etc.) which the car has. Some of it seemed gimmicky at first, but as the car just gets on with a lot of the basics you realise how easy it makes the C220 to drive when you jump into another car which doesn't have all the features. Don't get me wrong, it's not hard to drive a manual car etc, but you appreciate the level of equipment in the C220.

So far so good!

Picked mine up last Thursday, very happy with it. Changed from a E350 coupe and was expecting to be very disappointed but no complaints.......so far.

Ah, this is the review I should have written - great writeup.

With regard to the satnav voice, I tend to press the "mute" button during the first announcement. That has the effect of muting all further nav messages, letting me listen to the radio without interruption.

Nice average MPG Hitman, you must be heavy on motorway usage.

I haven't gone to great lengths to track my fuel consumption, but in my first thousand miles, the on-board computer is showing a whisker under 35mpg. Your figures do look good in comparison....

Yes I do mainly motorway miles.

Its a great car to cruise up and down the motorway. The best MPG I've got is 64 which is very good considering I am cruising between 70-80 mph.

Looks like I'm right just letting mpg take care of itself. Second Heathrow return has shown 56mpg average without resetting the trip clock.

My daughter now has her ipod touch connected with Command so she is quite happy acting like backseat 'DJ' when in the car which keeps her and her younger brother quiet ... until the novelty wears off! Good whilst it lasts though. ;)

A few months on and still as impressed as ever with the C Class.
I've really grown to like the characteristics of the car. Really comfy cruiser, but sport mode and loud pedal wake it up nicely! It really is a wolf in sheeps clothing in that respect and has surprised my RX-8 driving brother a few times.

I find the parktronic system excellent. Its much better than the audible BMW f&r parking sensors in our last BMW.
Whilst I don't really check economy I know from fill ups that it's fine.
Have had no problems at all to report.

I've been that impressed with Command that I've tried to cheaply circumnavigate the main features of command for my wifes new Mazda 2 Tamura. I had a Parrot Cki9200 fitted which is a very clever price of kit. Dual phones, dual mic, handsfree, auto phone sync, usb/bluetooth/sd card and bluetooth streaming, plus it will charge your iphone - all with a small, removable colour screen and wireless remote (plus voice activation). No sat nav, but that was never required for the Mazda as its a 'running around local car'. Really impressed with the Parrot and it works perfectly. Don't get me wrong, its a million miles away from Command (which I wouldn't now be without come new car time) but it does the job in a car where command (or comparable) wasn't available.

The Parrot display (removable) to the right and the wireless control (also removable) to the left of the steering wheel.

And the pretty little Mazda its fitted in. I've bought a second set of the alloys its wearing and am getting them refurbished in black. I'll fit winter tyres to them and that should turn the Mazda into a pretty competent winter runaround for times when the rwd Merc is better just left on the drive. (Mind you, that was only one weekend in the winter just gone!).

Merc wash time! Snow foam as a 'pre-wash' to get rid of any grit.

Two bucket wash and ready for drying off before detailing spray (Dodojuice Red Mist) applied. No need for polish/wax yet.

Nice write up! What snow foam and gun are you using?

Thanks. :thumb:
The snowfoam lance and snowfoam itelf were from Mark at Autobryte Direct within a Detailing World discounted group buy.
The Lance is a Karcher fitment to suit my powerwash. The snowfoam was their own, which has proved excellent. I mix it with warm water as it ensures you get a very good 'foam'.
I went on to buy a lot of other products through them as I found the service and advice to be very good, plus they gave me a discount which was nice. :D
