New Skin For My Merc

Hi jaymanek,

Many thanks for your further comments.

I hadnt realised how much work goes into a proper respray.. in particular the five coatings, i had assumed one coat would be enough, since the car would be resprayed with the same color as the exisitng one...

Thats why the more i find out, the more i doubt that £1200 would have resulted in a high quality job.

I am keen on seeing pictures of your 123... perhaps you can post them here ?.. or at least one high-res picture.

And I would also appreciate it if you can give me details of the respray shop where you had it done (you can pm me with the details if you wish).

Two days i go i had made up my mind to just go ahead and have the car re-sprayed (images of mirror-shiny C43 were floating in my head and obscuring anything else). Now, i think i should tread more carefully, and I certainly need to visit several bodyshops.

Many thanks and I will keep u posted with the develpments...

Hi,

TBH, you may not need the 5 coats as you dont need a full bare metal respray, but there still is a considerable amount of work...

Some pics of mine are here, mine was done 3 yrs ago now, these were a few months back.
My Mercs

My sprayer has moved and i havent been able to find him again. Mine was sort of a one off. He did mostly crash repairs and did mine in between. Took a total of 4 months!

I really would think carefully with your car. Its a C43, if it was a C180 then i wouldnt think twice, but the buyers of your car will be very particular.

Also, Sp!ke recently had his car done in croatia. Obviously much cheaper, but itll give you an idea of whats involved, details here:
Spikes Respray 1
Spikes Respray 2
Spikes Car in Members Gallery

(hope u dont mind Spike!)

Hope that helps you.

...BTW, do you know of any useful links where i can read up on general info about what is involved in respary jobs, and what trims should be removed etc ? I feel i ought to know more about this *before* i visit various bodyshops.
Have you seen MBenzNL's (Steve K.'s) site? There are lots of piccies there, some of which show his car during its full body respray:

Thanks to jaymanek and Steve for the links..

I am a getting a better idea now of whats involved in a respray project....

I am having some regular servicing and checkup done on my car next week, and as soon as that is over i will be visiting few bodyshops, armed with info from these links and elsewhere, before making the decision as to whether have a full respray, or just the two parts that need the work (bonnet and wheel)..

I will keep this forum posted :)

John,

Have you tried good quality cleaning products from the likes of Meguirs or Zymol to try and revive your paint? Its amazing what some of these products can do.

Regards

Tan.

Just for reference, I had my C43 partially resprayed this week (bonnet, front bumper and rear bumper) due to stone chips and the previous owner's somewhat careless approach to parking, and paid at a MB dealer €600. I paid "cash", thus avoiding the Belgian VAT (21 %) if you know what I mean... ;)

£ 1200 sounds very cheap for a complete respray, but given the quality of this respray I would on the other hand not be afraid to have it done, as it truely does make a visual impact to have a flawless paintwork.

The other reason that I would be dubious of having the car totally resprayed is that when it comes to reselling it many people will not believe that you did it purely because the paint work was not to your liking and will suspect more serious issues such as accident damage.
