New type of tyres (link with pics)

so when it wears out do you have to get a whole new rim?

looks cool though

Very interesting. Hope they do different styles too, not just make them look like regular tyres when (if) they go into production.

did you know that you HAVE to have pneumatic tyres in the UK? Part of the construction and use regs...

Cool idea tho' - i assume one would send the tweel back to michelin and get a re-mould done?

Looks cool, would be a nightmare to keep clean though!

Good idea and the lateral stiffness must indeed be a lot better than conventional tyres.

But Tyre Black fetishists are going to find those things damn difficult difficult to keep clean!

Clearly a rule made when the alternative was solid tyres. The rule can always be changed.

Interesting find Scott :) The designers of those new tyres look like they have been inspired by the 'Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle'

The wheels consisted of a spun aluminum hub and an 81.8 cm diameter, 23 cm wide tire made of zinc coated woven 0.083 cm diameter steel strands attached to the rim and discs of formed aluminum.

I can see the cops buying large tubs of superglue. :-)

he he - what a thought

Very interesting concept though it has to be said. Prob one of those that woudl have to grow on you though as they look so weird  :D

Remembering a Tiff segment from a while back, he was driving a car at super-duper speed around a banked track and there were concerns about the tyre temperature.

I wonder if this new design addresses any of the heat issues at warp speed - seems reasonable given that there is no air to heat up, and the rubber is probably a lot thicker.

Probably stops the tyre becoming 'taller' at high speed as well.

McLaren F1, 200mph (average), Millbrook Bowl? - UK land speed record attempt IIRC...
