If I keep the ML63, which seems likely, the wheels - genuine AMG, 19 x 9.5J 46mm offset (been refurbed once already, none too well by the look of them and the weight needed to balance them) - should I think be replaced. They're NLA new from anywhere, apart from a single wheel in Poland; £600-ish all-in - no thanks. Style-wise they're all right, but nothing special for my taste.

I'm minded to fit a set of four non-AMG, actually the same as I have on the rear of my CLS, which I like a lot; more than any of the AMG options for the 164 even if they were available. They are 19 x 9.5J , 48mm offset.

I can't see that that 2mm difference in offset would matter; anybody know otherwise?

It’s a small difference in offset, so I think you may get away with it. If you have them on your CLS then a trial fit will give you some comfort.

I understand that wheels are a very subjective thing and a matter of personal taste.

Are you not keen on the factory upgrade 20-inch wheel for the pre-facelift model?

Or the factory upgrade 21-inch wheel for the facelift model?

2mm difference in offset will make no difference whatsoever. Those 21s in the 2nd pic look Awesome. 🙂👍

I'm quite happy to stick with 19"; I wouldn't want the ride any stiffer, and I don't think they look undersized on the W164. I prefer relatively plain wheels, too; I'm not a fan of 'fussy' wheels, and I think the sort of wheels so often fitted to recent EVs are hideous. Simple but stylish is what I prefer; less is more...

I'm intending to fit these:

Like them, they will suit it. 🙂👍

I like them, classy. Would you need 4 rears though if CLS wheels ? That's commitment 😄

The 2007 ML63 didn't have staggered wheels OE, at least acording to the Owner's Manual (printed in 2006), and mine hasn't; mine are AMG VI, 9.5 x 19 like the CLS rears but with the 2mm different offset. Interestingly, the staggered-setup rears listed by Alloy Wheels Direct are all 9.5 x 19, but with a 56 mm offset.

They will spoil the 63, leave the wheels as they are slim.

Atually they're quite fat wheels - 9.5 in. I prefer the others, but if the ones on the car weren't past their best I'd not be looking to change them.

No, none of the wheel options on the W164 or W166 ML/GLE 63 are staggered 👍🏻

The ML is only 10% heavier than the CLS SB, so I can't see there would be a problem. So far as I am aware, if the sizes and offsets are the same, the wheel dimensions are the same, so they should be identical. I'll find out when I compare a wheel bolt from the CLS with a wheel bolt from the ML; same length bolts would imply the wheel bosses are an identical thickness, I think.

Apart from forged wheels, which are a different kettle of fish, AMG and non-AMG wheels are different only in the styling; they're all made in the same way, again afaik.

There is one small difference apart from the offsets, though; the ML wheel bolts are tightened to 150 nm, the CLS to 130 nm. I wonder why that would be, and does it matter :dk:?

Sometimes I get lucky...

Searching for the CLS wheel number on eBay, I found this: 1 Orig Mercedes-Benz 9.5Jx19 ET48 A2184010502 CLS Class C218 X218 F159 | eBay.

So I bought a set of four. They arrived today; genuine Ronal, immaculate, not a mark on any of them, other than from the tyres originally fitted. 'New Other'? Definitely. Happy bunny? Definitely.

Alloy Wheels Direct will sell you a set of four for £1821.18. These cost me £700.72 delivered. 'Nuff said...

BUGGER! They won't do. They fit all right, though the bosses are about 15mm less deep than the OE wheels, so spacers and longer wheel bolts would be needed, but I could live with that. However...

The OE wheel bosses and the spokes are just generally noticeably beefier than those of these, and I'm not prepared to second-guess Mercedes on whether that's necessary. I'm pretty sure my insurers wouldn't like it much, either, which is another consideration. They'll have to go back, so I'll also have the hassle of packaging them up again. Bugger! Not happy...

However... The same seller had these, genuine AMG, OE W164, also for sale: 4 Orig Mercedes-Benz Alufelgen AMG 9.5Jx19 ET56 A1644013002 9765 M ML W164 NEU | eBay

and they accepted a silly offer (£800 all-in), so I'm happy again. Game back on...

Whilst not your first choice, having wheels intended for the purpose is for the best, especially from an insurance point of view as you suggest.

Which wheels do you have at the moment?

These: AMG VI.jpg

AMG VI, NLA of course, so hard to find a new set, though they're available refurbished. They're not too bad, but a bit too 'fussy' for my taste; the ones I've just bought are AMG III, similar availability.

Much plainer; less is more...
