One week after picking up my SL I got a nasty stone chip on windscreen - not MoT failure - but about £1 coin size in passenger's line of sight.

Already had one chip in middle of screen - and screen was also badly scratched from wiper blade in driver's line of sight - making night time and or driving in rain very dodgy

Insurance company agreed to replace screen rather than repair - which was great news.

Replacement took place today - quite an involved job - but I am very happy with the results - well done Auto Windscreens

My guess is that scratching of windscreen might have been caused by previous owner(s) leaving wiper on in first position - so that when it rained wiper would automatically begin wiping...

...however I think this results in a single dry wipe every time the engine is started - which, over time, would have caused the scratching..?

What do others thinks - would that be potential cause or is it likely to have been something else like poor quality wipers..?

Its caused by wipers wearing down and not being replaced before hard rubber/plastic and even metal make contact with the screen and over time make it deeply marked.

My R129 is a little marked too, will probably replace it at some point.

Correct. Later M-B auto wipers can be left on and don't give the single sweep (even if bone dry) at startup.
