Someone save me!!!

My new wiper blades are squeaking like ****ing crazy!!!!!! I’m going to go insane

I tried OEM blades first, they squeaked so badly, and it left one area without being wiped.

I thought it was the blade being defective.

So I then visited Halfords and buy a set of BOSCH for £42 which wasn’t cheap but if it was squeak free I would be happy...

No no no!!! These squeak too!!

I am going mad :(

I have tried:

- clean the glass with washing up liquid
- clean the blades with washing up liquid
- clean with glass cleaner
- polish the windscreen with SRP
- spray lithium grease on the wiper mechanism

The squeak only happens on the upstroke. I’m going mad! Help me please

It becomes less loud when the screen is very very wet.

The old ones didn’t squeak!!!!!!! Noooooooooo

Any help greatly appreciated, please save me :D

I'd guess it's something on the glass rather than the blades, but it sounds like you've already tried that.

What about wiping the screen with propan-2-ol (IPA) to get rid of any residual oils that the detergent didn't touch?

Try ALDI or lidl for wipes for cleaning specs, ipa based I think but a good grease removal pad

Run the wipers with the blades removed and cover the end of arms with socks/towing to prevent scratching glass, see if the still squeak. Keep the socks/towing wet and make sure the don’t come off the wiper arms or the glass will be scratched.

Squeak sounds metallic?

I also think its coming from this part, but it was fine in the morning! Could the act of removing the old blades have slightly moved the mechanism etc out of alignment?

I sprayed it with lithium grease but no help :(

You need to clear all that crap out otherwise your going to get a flooded footwell if you don't watch out!

Even that's better than squeaks! I can't stand squeaks and rattles. :(

Especially when I have effectively spent £80 today to make my wipers worse :wallbash:

If the squeak is metal, you may really need to remove the arm and use a penetrating oil or WD40, grease might be too thick to get where it is needed., try the socks first, if it still squeaks then you can eliminate the rubber blades as the cause.

Hard to say if removal would have caused this, could still be the rubber though.

Not when your ECU is ruined.

I don't think it's that the bolt or joint, it's gonna be the wiper blade IMO

If the wipers were raised up, would they still work if I triggered them from inside the car? Rather than the socks option?

Not sure about them working when up as I’m not familiar with your setup, if the were up, there would be no spring pressure so less of a strain, and so you might not get a squeak, but try it anyway as its so easy to do.

Dec,

Do you think I could just cover the blades with the socks? Rather than removing them. Then I could surely see if the squeak still happens?

Cheers,
Abs

Take a step back, in the daylight keep switching them off as they sweep to check they are touching correctly.

It becomes quieter when wet is the clue.

Not when your ECU is ruined..

My neighbour scrapped his 53-Reg A4 Cabrio because of blocked scuttle drains.

He allowed the leaves the accumulate, and one day the hood, electric windows, and central locking started playing-up.

The Audi dealer told him that there's a 'control unit' (front SAM?) that became flooded.

A new one plus fitting plus coding would cost more than the car is worth.... so he now has a 54-Reg A4 Estate instead.

He seems quite happy with the transition though...

Any ideas for my wipers :p:D

I suppose that would work too, as long as the rubber doesn’t touch the glass, perhaps one sock inside the other to make it thicker, keep it wet so the don’t drag.

Is the noise from the rubber friction on the glass? Or from the motor or spindle mechanism?

I wish I knew I really do :(

Please provide any ideas for either or and I’ll try both :p

I had the same problem.

I cleaned my screen with IPA although i'm quite lucky as e have it at work.

Then i sprayed some wd40 on the mechanism joints followed by some light spray grease ran the wipers then applied again I did this more for maintenance while i was in the area than the squeak. This didn't solve anything although slightly better after the IPA clean.

However over time the squeak has lessened as i suppose the wipers have broken in .... sometimes you just need to go to your happy place. :)

Maybe just give them a chance to bed in a bit if the above doesn't work as your using new rubber on clean glass, also if it's quieter when wet it would make sense as the surface would be slicker offeing less friction and thusly less of a squeak.

I bought the same Bosch wipers from halfords for the sole reason i have a trade card and they where cheaper than OEM from eBay.
