Hello, first post so please be gentle. :D

I'm considering a W203 C55 AMG, am I mad? I know the fuel costs will be errm interesting, but what else should I beware of. They seem to be cheaper to look after than the E55, things like brakes, suspension etc seem less complex than the E55. I'm happy to do some spanner work myself. Servicing at MB seems reasonable, less than the servicing of my wife's former car, an Alfa Mito 1.3 derv.

Are those with highish miles and a legion of owners to be avoided?

Any comments or advice appreciated.

Thanks.

I happen to be selling my C55 due to my job, but would be happy to tell you about the pro's and cons. I'm sure most C55 owners will agree with my comments even if they sound a bit biased.

Fuel economy is surprisingly good actually. 25mpg on long runs, and over 20mpg around town which isn't that far off most petrol cars I've had with 2litre engines, let alone 400hp 5.4litre ones. Insurance is cheap as well for some strange reason. With 10years NCD, I only pay £400. No idea why as its a group 20 car.

The car itself is amazing, even if you ignore the engine (which is by far the best thing about it). It's smooth, quiet and comfortable. Hundreds of gadgets and in the 2 years I've had mine not a single thing has gone wrong.

I have heard of issues with E55s having leaks on the Air suspension, but a quick search on this forum should help you read up on that. I haven't read much due to not owning one.

The main differences between the C and E are that the E had the supercharger meaning even more brutal acceleration than the C, but is a much larger, softer car. The fuel economy on the Es is worse due to the size and supercharger, but you get a larger more executive feel, rather than the sharp handling C. (The C is by no means slow by the way). The acceleration is instant and breathtaking.

Cons. The ride can be a little hard on bumps as in most sporty cars nowadays as i have 19" low profiles on my car but I like the crispness of the handling. Mercedes prices for servicing are ridiculous. Always use an independent specialist when you can. You get a better service at a better price. Search on this forum for you recommended local garage.

Ill let other people comment as well, to give an E class side as I've only driven one once, rather than owned one. But I love my C55 and will regret putting it up for sale as soon as I sell it!

Just showing average mpg.

Thanks for that. Not sure I really want an e55 for the reasons you state. I did see yours for sale but I need to sell my xf plus yours is slightly over my budget too. Looks a nice car though.
