Drove up here (to bathgate) this evening, non-stop. Came over A68, never done it in the dark before, dropped to -5 on the higher bits and a light dusting of snow! Kept to speed limits (ish) - economy I think is remarkable for a big car.

What a difference a smaller body makes!

Fine place Bathgate. What's the attraction for you?

A68 is all speed cameras but certainly pretty. We go M6 - A66 - M1 - M62.

Bathgate was work - office move for a client of mine, just getting them back on the WAN. I've done that route (and would do that normally for the old office in Glasgow) but it's a bit boring, unless there's heave snow.

Will PM you if I'm heading that way again - could meet for a drink?

A68, very early oclock was the scene of one of my most enjoyable drives in a MK1 Golf GTI.

Ahh, they were the days.

Do you check the mileage after adjusting the slippers and flat cap :p

Dave!

Anyway, did you see the route? Lots of hills, plus 2mph faster average, and from a cold start too!

I'll see your 41.4mpg & 51mph average speed and raise you 50.1mpg & 56mph average speed from the same road. And yes there are a lot of very steep hills.

So that's 50mpg with 4 cylinders and 40mpg with 5 cylinders.
How many should I get on that route with 6 cylinders?;)

I got 35mph going up the A68 a couple of weeks ago. and 39 back via the A1

I need to get my "hypermiling" friend to give it a go sometime. Economy driving is an artform - we both drove full cars (four passengers and luggage) from Hull to Stanstead in the early hours of one morning, he averaged 42mpg, I got 39. He arrived withing 5 minutes of me.

May not sound amazing but his car is a Saab 9-3 1.8t, petrol and turbo. Mine's diesel.
