Hi guys i havea problem with my air con on my c240 which has just been re-gassed but still not any colder, i have checked the duo valves and they are working correctly. Do i need to look at getting a new or second hand compressor?

You probably have leak somewhere but before buying anything please get a specialist to find it!

No leaks and holding ok but pipes in engine bay not getting cold.

:dk:

What did the guy who re-gassed it say??

does it not just need new valve seals? we i had the same problem with our ML270, took it back to the place that gassed it, they said it just needed new valve seals and they would fill it up again for free!

First of all you should be able to see the compressor running by watching it by getting someone to switch the aircon on and off.

When the pump is running the pipe from the compressor to the condenser should be hot and the other pipe from the condenser to the drier shoudl be cool. This will give you and idea as to wether the compressor is working.

I'd double check the gas level in the car.

When was the last time it was used ?

Get a specialist to do a dye test on it , i had my air con re gassed on my old CLK , but it all leaked out again a couple of days later due to a leak in the radiator ( where leaves bunch up against it , it rots through ) ...

If it hasn't been used for ages , then either hardened seals will be the culprit or a rotted rad ...

If you have just bought the car and the seller said ' It just wants a re-gas ! ' , chances are you've been had.

Well if its holding pressure and the fat pipe is not getting cold you have either an electrical problem or the compressor is duff.

Is the lead to the compressor ok?

Note that there is also a valve on the drier that monitors the gas level and if there is no gas in the system it stops the compressor from engaging, in order to protect the system.

On the Mercs, you will find that they can be sensitive to the amount of gas in the system.....meaning that your system may not be totally empty but its not empty enough to stop the compressor, but it is empty enough not to produce any cold air.

Id get the gas levels rechecked if the compressor is OK. You either have a leak or the system that filled you car, (and they are mostly automatic) hasn't done the job properly for some reason.

I recently had this experience from Kwickfit. I recently replaced my condenser and drier due to a minor leak and took it down to Kwickfit for a recharge. The plonker who did the recharge wasn't too friendly, didnt know where to connect the hoses until I showed him and then he told me the car would be ready in 20 min !!!!!! It usually takes 20 min to vacuum the system let alone fill it properly.

I came back in 20 min and sure enough the car was out and he was fighting with the controls, didn't even know how to switch the aircon on, and then said to me " its no good, your compressor is knackered" !!!!

A quick look under the bonnet showed that the compressor was running and he was talking a load of rubbish, so I took it into another place, they found very little gas in the system, properly regassed it, which took over an hour and fine since.

This may sound a bit blond but where is the compressor located? I`ll check it tonight.

Do you have the digital or analogue air conditioning/climate controls?

Ie - is there an LCD screen or not? If so you may be able to perform some basic diagnostics on the system.

I`ve just been out and checked over it and noticed that when you switch the EC button on and off the compressor doesn`t turn, i`ve heard that this could be due to coolant level being low?
Is there any other things i need to check or other things that could prevent it turning?
Any help on this would be most helpful guys.

To identify the compressor, follow the two pipes back from the condenser.....one will go to the drier ( looking from above looks circular with a pipe going in and coming out, sometimes has a glass sighting hole) which is in the right hand corner when you face the engine from the front. The other pipe which should run hot if the compressor is working goes to the compressor.

First check your fuses for a blown fuse for the aircon circuit. I think that there are two fuses, one for the fans and one for the rest of the system.

Then if you are 100% sure that the compressor is not spinning, you will have to disconnect the electrical connector and check for voltage when the aircon is switched on.

As I said earlier, the other thing that will stop the compressor from spinning is the sensor that is on the side of the drier that detects low gas level.

I had same thing on a truck last night, checked pressures ok, so unplugged compressor wiring and supplied my own power and earth, compressor spun up and air con ran a treat, turned out to be bad connection on compressor plug.

Hi guys, i took the car to kwik fit today and they regassed and still no change to the system, thay told me there was no leaks and also no charge. So i got home and removed the plastic engine protector underneath and noticed the sensor wire was loose, refixed and now got icy cold blowing into the car.
Thanks for all the tips guys cos i wouldn`t know where to look.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome, glad it was something simple and cheap (how often does that happen? Not often enough!).
