No intermittent on wipers

I've just bought a 2001 E320 W210. The car is fabulous, but has no intermittent wipe function. When it the first position, wipers work continuously whether the screen is wet or dry. The wipers will do a single sweep when I dab the end of the stick though. Does this sound like a faulty relay or something more sinister?

Many thanks in advance.

This fault often co-insides with a faulty rain sensor.

I am not sure if the car should have rain sensing wipers. There is nothing on the stick, and as I look at the screen from the outside there is a black area that has a bluey neon coloured square in it about 2.5cm long. Further than that ...

Seems like a fault to me.
Dabbing the end of the stick is the wash wipe and should bring out washer fluid + about 4 sweeps.
First position is intermittent

Thanks recycled. I realise the end of the stick is washer function, I mentionned it to illustrate that a single sweep was possible, but just not on intermittent / rain sensing position. From other threads, it seems that when rain sensing goes wrong, they revert to intermittent. It just seems odd that mine is permanently on.

As far as I know ,with the rain sensor there is no intermittent wipe, it does one wipe and then stops if no rain. Mine does and I am happy with that

The bluey thing is most likely to be your rain sensor, if you do have auto wipers then you will not have an intermitent wipe option on your stalk only Auto , ON , FAST

Call your loacl dealer with reg no. and they'll tell you for free.

My W203 had the same problem, it didnt work for about a year and then misteriously started working again at first only in the wet, then all the time. I believe it is a relay but there are lots of them and can get expensive to fix, it may be worth just living with it.

if you disconnect the rain sensor on the W210 it goes back to Int on position 1
