MB E320 CDI W210
Hi,

Hope one of you kind people can help. I have a 2000 e320 cdi w210, the alternator failed (bearings jammed) and I managed to source another one. The alternator has now been replaced, but the car refuses to rev above 3000 and there's very little power and no kickdown. Weirdly, after driving it for 5 miles or so the power came back. So I stopped it, and tried again, same thing until about another 5 miles had gone by, and then off it went !?! I'm suspecting that the mechanic dislodged something when changing the alternator, i've checked the MAF, and it makes no difference plugged in or not. There is no errors showing on the dash at all.

Anyone help?

Andy

Update : I got back in the car this morning and it drives perfectly. No more limp mode :) But no idea what caused it.... Any ideas ? Would disconnecting the battery have caused it ?

I hope this doesn't happen again...

If the engine runs without the maf then I would say that is your problem as removing it should put the car in limp mode. It does go straight in to limp mode on my car if I remove it. Get a new maf and air filter and try that as it won't throw any codes either so it's worth a shot.

Could be a few things and will not throw up any lights on the dash, main thing is it has gone away, fingers crossed it stays that way!

It could be something simple like the egr pipe from the transducer to the valve coming off

Throwing parts at a problem without a proper diagnosis is not the smartest way to attempt to fix something. It may or may not be the MAF, it could be the wiring to it or, indeed, another problem entirely.
