No SL For Me... :(

The option remains of course to just purchase the SL and have it delivered with a Pink bow on and some flowers... That should change her mind right...?

I'm sure she'll get used to it - can always appear daunting at first.

I personally wouldn't touch a Crossfire with a bargepole - or an R170 for that matter unless it's really her car and you get the odd spin.

Apologies. I obviously offended. Sorry. :o

On a more serious note, what about a Boxster?

Erm I know it may sound harsh to any boxster owners but it still comes across as a poor mans Porsche IMHO.

Even though the Cayman looks nice it still has that stigma of not being a 911.

Plus will she be able to fit the weekly shopping in a Porsche?

Yes the doors are big. I keep a 6" long piece of split grey foam pipe lagging in the door pocket of my R129 in case of emergencies! Slip that over the rear edge of the door and you can open it hard against anything to squeeze out, if necessary.
Thats genius!

To be honest the SL sounds like the right car - SWMBO needs convincing.

I know exactly what you mean. However a full blown 911 is a bit OTT for a shopping runaround - although many probably do use one as such.
A Boxster remains a good worthy car and has the quality label that some other cars suggested dont have.
I would rather have a Boxster than a Crossfire any day.

Very true.

But...

The people down the street have just bought a boxster.

And I hate being the 2nd person on the street to buy a car... (its happened too many times... )

But yes I immagine the boxster would be more of a quality vehicle that the crossfire...

They handle reasonably well and have mostly merc mechanicals so should be reliable enough. Just dont expect merc levels of quality trim-wise for example. They were first introduced in coupe form and the looks were an acquired taste to say the least. This sort of spoiled the market for the roadster which was introduced slightly later and is a much better looking car IMHO. They depreciate a lot from new but that means there should be some good secondhand bargains to be had. Servicing costs would be on a par with Mercedes I would guess. http://www.whatcar.com/car-review-summary.aspx?NEW_USED=1&MA_TYPE=1&MA=37&RT=609

Just had a quick look at the specs and it doesnt seem to come through the tests with flying colours. Seems a bit flawed in certain areas. I dont think it will steal many away from MB.
I see that one of the options is a fairly expensive SATNAV unit (about £1200). I wonder if it is a derivative of the new generation COMAND units?

A very places have rated the XFire Coupe as a better motor than the C class.

But the base C Class (Classic?) trim levels aren't great IMHO.

I would rather have a base spec C class than topline Xfire. If I means I cant have heated seats etc..then so be it.
Who decides which is "best". Its a subjective thing and open to personal likes and whims.
But of course, thats MY personal choice.

Indeed Dave.

I've just suggested a C-Coupe to her.. Too wide apparently.

I'd much prefer to stay with the Merc Marque...

Any ideas for a car a woman could drive and park which would be fun on a weekend and I could fit in? (I am tall and broad btw)
She what must always be obeyed is off to Teignmouth to do some shopping in our 'stretched limo' :) to put a few miles on it.

I dread to think of the horrible parking problems she will have to cope with but driving any car is all about confidence. What a pity you can't hire a bigger car for your wife to play with and gain oodles of confidence.. An SL is a wow car with lots of presence, but if the driver lacks the confidence then sadly it will never happen :o :)

Regards
John

Edit
The E-class she drives has parktronic, but the bigger vehicle does not.
