Evening All,

Having had the SL500 now for about 3 weeks I thought it was time to get the Stereo working - it is a Sony CDX-M630 aftermarket unit and was constantly saying "Code In". The previous owner didn't have it and had never used it.

Thanks to the power of Google I got a list of possible codes for it and, lo and behold, one actually worked. So the stereo was unlocked. CD in and... nothing. Silence. The unit thinks it is playing as the equaliser graph thingy on the display is working as the music plays and the CD timer is ticking up.

The speakers appear to be wired directly into the back of the unit on Phono cables.

I have checked the fuse for the Stereo that is mentioned in the manual and also pulled the unit out and all appears to be wired in properly round the back.

Is there anything else I can check to see why I am experiencing silence? I have also spotted that the Aerial is not going up when the radio is turned on - not sure if this is related or not...?

I'm not that good at car electrics etc. so hopefully a non-too-techie response, but if there is anything else quick and simple I can check it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

There could be a number of possibilities causing the no sound problem - I'll list them in order of ease of checking :

1. Ensure the audio settings are reset to 'standard' - specifically the balance and fader.

2. Ensure the ATT function is not on

3. Check wiring - could be the speakers are not wired correctly and/or the wired telephone attenuation input is wired up when it shouldn't be.

Have you a copy of the instructions ? If not, you can download a pdf copy from one of the many websites out there in cyberland.

Good luck

Hi,

Balance and Fader - didn't think of that - could be a simple one in that case - will check.

What's an ATT function?

With regards to point 3 I have done that already. Got hold of a PDF of the manual but it doesn't cover the wiring at all, alas.

Will check the Balance and Fader initially and see what occurs...

Thanks.

Att

The ATT function is the Attenuation - this is where the sound output is muted.

This function can be turned on/off by two methods :

i. There is an ATT button on the front of the head unit which toggles the function on/off.

ii. There is a wire going into the rear of the head unit which turns on the ATT function if it is connected to either 0V or +12V (not sure which - will explain in the installation instructions) - usually connected to wired in mobile phone installation.

I think it is more likely to be the ATT wire to the rear of the unit, the fact that the aerial is not moving might suggest that the wiring is not correct.

The speakers appear to be wired directly into the back of the unit on Phono cables.

That's a giveaway. Those should lead to a separate amp that should be driving a least some, if not all of the speakers (depending on how it's all been wired up - are the car's speaker cables connected to the back of the unit or not?)

Chances are the fuse on the amp has gone or it's not turning on. Worst case scenario the amp was snaffled by the previous owner leaving you high and dry.

The aerial not moving could well be down to it not being properly connected to the switching output on the headunit - which may tie in to some of the above, for example the "Code In". I wonder if the previous gear was removed and something hastily put in its place?

Ah ha! One amp found! Doesn't seem to be getting power though - with the radio on the one light I can see it is not lighting up. The unit is a Priority PT304 Mosfet Series - never heard of it!

Checked the fuse (30A) and it appears Ok. Will get the volt meter across the (what I assume) is the power feeds and see what occurs.

Anything else obvious I can check?
