Hello all.

Are there any N8 users out there?

My 11-month old N8 has just packed up. One moment taking a photo of my son feeding his pet 'chilla, and then the screen goes off and no sign of life.

I thought it was a bit strange that the battery had given up so suddenly, and my suspicions were confirmed a short while later when neither the mains charger nor the USB would offer any prospect of resurrection.

I have plugged it into the PC, and that doesn't recognise that there is anything plugged in. The Nokia suite doesn't see it either.

So it would appear that it has gone to meet its maker. Or rather, it will tomorrow, because its maker is closed for the night now.

I have googled the problem and there is no shortage of results. Looks like a very common problem if you look at their own website's discussion boards. And everyone else's.

I have removed the battery and tried again - no change. I have contacted Orange, who no longer support handsets beyond 6 months of purchas,e and send you directly to the manufacturer, who as I said earlier are now closed for the night.

Can anyone offer any advice please?

if its a new phone it should be covered by Nokias warranty.

If its not, push for goodwill in getting a replacement.

Otherwise, try and have it replaced with an iPhone. They're ace.

Yeah, I'll see what Nokia say in the morning when I phone them.

As for the iPhone, I'm not really ready to be assimilated into the Borg just yet...

Honestly, I was a skeptic but I love mine. Had the HTC before and hated it with a passion.

Ok, no need to bring "fanboyism" into this and start pushing your Apple 'things'...

I mean I don't go round pushing my Windows phone etc...

If you removed your battery then you have invalidated your warranty. Was the battery very low on charge when this happened?
Plug the phone into the mains charger and turn it on at its on/off switch.
This happened to mine 2 weeks ago, battery was very low at the time, all ok now.

WHAT?!

Tell me - how do you put the sim card in your phone without removing the battery? DId the phone come with the battery already in? Is the battery not of the removable kind like on every othermobile?

When the battery is low, my Nokia N97 does not like the Nokia mains charger, all that will charge it is a mains adapter with a USB socket built in, and I then plug in the USB connecting lead for the PC. Give it a whirl, nowt to be lost by trying.

The battery is suppose to be changed at a service centre only..I think, I'm not sure now???

About the battery
Your device has an internal, nonremovable, rechargeable battery. Use only Nokia
approved chargers designated for this device. You can also use a compatible USB data
cable to charge your device.
Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device. Take the device to the nearest
authorised service facility for replacement of the battery.
Authorised retail points may also offer a battery replacement service.
Important: Only qualified personnel or an authorised service facility should
replace the battery. Unauthorised battery replacement may invalidate your warranty.
When your device is low on power, power save mode is activated. You may not be able
to modify the settings of certain applications. To deactivate power save mode, press
the power key , and select Deactivate power saving.

I know you dont like fan boys, neither do i, so dont worry i wont pursuade you to switch to X.

Im sorry this isnt helpfull to you right now, but I have to say it was a gamble choosing a nokia phone AND a phone with windows os.
Surly you now see why most of the modern world has ditched these dinasoars. Im afraid to say that the technology and peoples undestanding of bloated software has progressed to the point only those coerced by clever marketing will now ever buy them.
Sorry.

I think replacing the battery isn't the same as "taking out the battery".

;)

It does say "internal, nonremovable" in Dec's quote - strange that, never seen or heard of a phone with a non-removable battery (save something like the iPhone)

Sorry about that, didn't think Nokia would stoop so low as to have batteries only they can take out

I think you are probably right there, the could have added that “removing the battery “ is an “offence” too

But they are good though and because *** knows Keith personally, he's only recommending it to him based on his own experience.

It failed at extremely short notice. I have removed the SD card, which is my medium of choice for storing personal data, and the photo of my son is corrupt. Top half of the image is fine, but the bottom half is just a sequence of grey blocks.

I have used both charging methods for at least half an hour each, but no life from the phone. PC still doesn't recognise it as a connected device.

It's obviously FUBAR. :(

For the record it is a Symbian phone, not Windoze.

All attempts at revival have failed thus far. It is just inside its warranty period. The local Nokia repair shop (Carphone Warehouse) will be receiving me, with it, tomorrow.

Let's see what happens...

Got the phone back fully working last night. Some sort of software master reinstall which could not be performed using 'normal' means. It appears to have done something irrecoverable, so I wonder if it attempted a 'divide by zero', like the infamous USS Yorktown WinNT incident.

Just got to set everything (and I mean everything) back up again as it has come back completely wiped clean and is acting as if I am its first human contact.

Still, no complaints as at least it's back in the land of the living. :)

Sorted!

Goes to google USS Yorktown.
