managed to get the bonnet open but car still won't crank over. abs and esp lights all on and cooling fan kicks in but just won't turn. checked the fuses and they're all good. brake lights work fine so don't think it's the switch. gearshift goes through the gate ok. new battery in and just the same. could it be a relay? read a thread about the ecu fan but all the fuses are good, now at a bit of a loss as to what to do next

starter motor? did you check that?

mauno, unfortunately beyond seeing if there was one there, i wouldn't have a clue!! stripped out the ecu box and it was very damp in and around there. key goes all the way but doesn't crank. read various threads about ECU fan but apart from being wet it all looks good. car has been sat for a year on neighbours drive, started it up and drove 3 miles for petrol, then display lit up like xmas tree. next day it was a non starter. i have faith though that it will be something simple. thanks for taking the time to help

Disconnect battery, leave for 2-3 minutes and reconnect. As in reboot a computer.
Hope you did not jump start car using too high revs.

where are you live?

hi Druand, didn't jump start, just replaced battery and away she went.......briefly. my concern is the amount of damp around the ECU's, but looking on ebay could get a 'new' set for about £150 and then get them remappped to car. if anyone knows a decent experienced person in my area would appreciate it.
cheers.

There are several relays switches associated with the starter solenoid circuit. A fault with any of these means the the starter solenoid will not be energised and move to turn the starter motor. There is for example a gearbox inhibitor switch which will cut power to the starter solenoid if its faulty. I would look at the starter circuitry before looking at the engine ecu etc.

As above, check for live feed and cranking feed at the starter motor first then go from there.

hi all, thanks for all of your help, Alf230, where would i find the k40relay? but also i've just come across this and would like to know where the BAS control module lives?

The engine does not start or the Touch Start feature does not work.

All vehicles having Brake Assist (BAS) on or after 1997.

§ There is a defect in the CAN data bus.
§ There is moisture or corrosion in BAS control module multi-plug 3.

§ Remove the moisture/corrosion.
§ If defect is present, replace the BAS control module.

wahoooooooooo!!!! stripped out the engine management system and left it in airing cupboard for three days, cleaned some crud off a couple of pins and the socket. put it all back together with battery in place and fired up first time. now purring like a puddy cat. massive thanks to all for your help
