Hi everyone I’m still having issues with my NOX sensor giving me the engine management light with 2 NOX sensor codes issued and that’s after replacing the both of them last week.

The garage that changed them over relearned them apparently but before I go wasting any more money can anybody tell me if they should have been SCN coded to the car ?

It’s mixed opinions online and just wondering if that’s the reason for the issues with the 2 codes or even maybe it needs a software update ? Any advice is very grateful thanks

An interesting video on the technology which touches on just how sensitive to contamination these modified twin cell oxygen [lambda] type sensors are. the first cell removes any oxygen from the exhaust gas sample before transferring it to the second cell which then splits the NOx into N and Ox which is then measured like a lambda sensor. Moisture build up is evidently a problem which needs to be flashed off every so often and there may be a ECU software update for this There is evidently an entire page on the MB Star system devoted to coding the combined sensor/controller so its possible Star is needed to do this properly.

You need to have the software updated and tell the car that is has new ones. Any decent MB specialist can do this for you. We charge £50, dealers are about £100 upwards.

Thanks for the confirmation mate I ended up calling my local dealership today who said that they would have to have a diagnostic check done first at £140 and then if it’s found that they need coding it’s an additional £70 so it’s expensive I’ll call my local specialist in the morning see if they can sort it.

Can I just ask though because I changed both sensors yet I’m only getting the 2 fault codes on the bank 1 sensor and not the other surly if they need coding in both would show faults would they not ?

My original fault hence changing the sensors was again on bank 1 but only one code showed now I have the same code and another since fitting the new ones it’s all very strange

Thank you mate I appreciate it

UPDATE

Just to update the thread I have a bit of good news I ended up ordering another NOX sensor this time from Poland and fitted it myself on the drive this afternoon and so far no EML or fault codes stored normally the codes appear within minutes of driving and the EML light follows but after a good long drive and stopping and then driving home im so happy to say nothing has reappeared. So fingers crossed it was just a simple faulty NOX sensor that I was originally sent which I’ve now sent back to Germany for a refund. I never did get them coded or the system updated as I thought I’d try this option first and luckily it’s worked.

Also a massive Thanks to Grober for all his help and also getting me the part numbers id of been completely stuck without your help mate so thank you

Hope this is a permanent fix this time! I suspect we are going to hear a lot more about NOx Sensor failures as the first cars fitted with them start to put on the miles.

Yes fingers crossed I also think this is going be a big issue like you said unfortunately

Had the same problem just changed two nox sensors not MB parts but same parts numbers on them, does anybody know where I can get them reprogrammed in the North East MB dealership refuse to do it as no MB parts
