I have recently sold my old 11Mbps Wireless router and was about to buy the new DG834G 54Mbps adsl router.
However, when looking around for the best price I came across the new WGT 624 108Mbps it costs less than the 834 at about £100 inc, am i write in assuming that I will need to buy an additional adsl modem to get the thing to work or is it only compatible with cable??

Does anyone have any experience with these units or views on whether 108Mbps is worth it or should i just go with 54Mbps?

Regards

Tan

im not sure to be totally honest, it it does not ahve a adsl modem built in but has a ethernet port to take your internet connection, you should jsut be able to buy a ethernet ADSL modem and plug that inot it

it may be better off e-mailing netgear jsut to makde sure it would work before you part with any money

Don't do it - it is not a good deal and you will need a ADSL modem too!

I would on this occassion recommend you wait for this bit of kit which is expected to hit the market before the end of the month:

Doggies doo dahs

There is a discussion forum here

I would make a pre-order too, they will be a popular buy at this price point.

I bought the predecessor to this the DSL 604+ which has been excellent - I will not be upgrading though until it turns it up its toes or you offer me £100 for it ;-)

Let us know on what you decide to do.

Norman,

Thanks for the offer but I just sold the 11Mbps wireless netgear router so i could get 54mbps..not coz i need it more coz i want it! I justified it in my head because i made money on what i paid originally and sold if for £110.

I think i guna go with the DG834M much the same as the D-link but made by Netgear. As you can prolly tell i bit of a netgear fan. Total cost delivered is bout £120

Can I improve upon my wireless setup?

I have a draytek Vigor 2600 wireless adsl router at home connected by cable to a normal PC and to my Toshiba Satellite Laptop via a D link Airplus DWL 650+

We have Adsl via Zen Internet who use BT.

I have another Vigor 2600 at my office and have a vpn betwixt the 2 set up by those nice people at Zen. cos its all greek to me.

Any tips Norm.

cheers

Steve

You do not say if your router is the 2600G which I will assume it is - in that case it is 54Mbps on the wireless side.

So, as long as your DLINK wifi card is the DWL G650 rather than the DWL 650+ ( which is 22Mbps) then you will be getting best performance, saying that it would be a marginal improvement (and probably not noticeable) and not cost effective to buy the DWL G650 unless you could get money back by selling the 650+

In any case you have a very capable setup, I trust you have enabled WEP and MAC control for security purposes.

PS: It is both greek and geek to me ;)

I know that I am a netgear fan but... 3 com have an offer which inludes a free 54mbps pcmcia card for the same type of 54mbps wireless router.. what are 3com products like..any ideas? r they better than netgear

I just downgraded from a monster Cisco box to the Netgear 834G all-in-one. Seems to match almost every feature of the Dlink box mentioned above (unless I am blind), but does cost a few quid more.

Wireless is every bit as good as my old twin aerial Linksys box. Cannot spot any change in DSL throughput over the Cisco (not that I expected any difference).

Took all of abut 5 minutes to set up, runs very well and has some very nifty features. Even has a dyndns.org client built in. Wall mountable, which could be of use to some.

Extremely happy with the purchase and well worth the money. No regrets here.

Hi NormanB

Its a Draytek Vigor 2600 we

The D link WiFi card is a Dlink Airplus DWL650+

my status icon says I am connected at 11mbs

anyone want to buy the DWL650+ ??

Decided after much deliberation...and a free PCMCIA 54Mbps wireless card to buy the 3com router. Its a good bit of kit and am getting much better signal strength on my PC upstairs using the same Netgear 11Mbps card that i used to use. Paid £112 in the end so save nearly a tenner on the Netgear price.

The Draytek Vigor 2600 we - will only support 11Mbs even though your Dlink card is capable off 22Mbps.

So it is your router that it is the barrier to better performance not your card.

Unless you have a demanding wifi requirement stick with what you have - otherwise you will need to upgrade all round (router +card) .

Hi, I know it's too late for Tan, but maybe applicable to anyone else looking for Netgear DG834...£93.99 inc VAT excl P&P. Actually I've yet to decide which one i am gonna buy Netgear or 3Com (same as Tan's recent buy)

Anyway, hope this URL is useful to the members.
Ps: Tan, what's your opinion on 3COM that you just bought?

Thanks.

Thats a pity,

I bought the kit as recommended by Zen.

What would you uggest that a demanding use for wi fi would be. ?? The signal keeps dropping in normal use and I have to switch the router power off & on again . Also sometimes the D link card fails to register in the laptop midway thru a session, so I have to pop it out & reinsert it . very weird and irritating.

Anyone else have these kind of probs.

Should I get more reliable and faster kit in the hope the problem wil go away.

I am running on win xp home

Steve - I will take these one at a time.

Essentially the kit Zen recommended you buy is OK, just a curious mix of 11Mbps and 22Mbps.

A demanding wifi application would be video streaming. Occasional and normal large file downloads (say less than a Gig) should not be a problem for your current line up.

Wifi signal drop out - just check you have the latest firmware for your router and drivers for your wifi card. The router manufacturers seem to use the punter as beta developers and firmware is regularly updated to address issues such as this. However, my experience - my router is on 24/7 and I have to reboot it about once a month (don't know why but there your are) and the two PCs on my network which have wifi sometimes require a reboot to get the wifi card up and running (again don't know why - suspect it is more a windows issue). If you check the appropriate geeky forums most of this kit seems to suffer these sort of issues, there are tweaks you can make to your settings but it is all too scary for me!!

Buy new faster kit - Depends how p***ed off you are and how deep your pockets are - and then there are no copper bottoms that you will not have to reboot occassionally. I hesitate to advise you on the latest kit cos I have not tried it and I am content with my 22Mbps kit. I have DLINK kit and I like it - its neat. What I will say is, you can get very much more - and for considerably less money now, than you could a year ago - seems to be the way of things with this kit.

XP Home is fine.

Good luck

With regards the 3com I am finding it very good and the signal streangth is far better than i was getting with my previous netgear outer prolly due to two erials as opposed to the netgears one.

If you do go down the road of netgear check out simply.co.uk the units price is slightly higher but I think there P&P was cheaper thus making it cheaper overall. Other cheap suppliers are dabs and savastore.com

If you are interested in the 3com i got mine from wstore.co.uk with the free wireless card this is a really good deal.

thanks very much Norman - plenty to ponder , but knowing me I'll end up with new kit just cos its faster and if I only have to reboot once or twice a month that's a whole lot better than 2 or 3 times a day.

;)
