I am a bit of an old f*rt but one thing I have found over the years is buy things once - if you buy this for 8 quid it will end up in the bin and you will have to buy something that works. If you are lucky the cheap piece of junk will not do any damage to your car's plug in socket or electronics.

I use carsoft. It works OK but I bought the Multiplexer unit to go with it from China.

It cost about £120

I Think Laser Tools Does One For About £12 From A Motor Factors But Halfords Is A Lot Cheaper But The Question Is How Many Times Will You Use It If It Is 1 Or 2 Times It Is Worth It But If You Are Going To Use It Thousands Of Times It Is Worth Paying A Bit More

Desilva i assume you need the multiplexer because you have the 38pin socket?

Is my 2001 e class the same and where is it?

As for how many times i will use it i havent got a clue! but my last car a TD5 Discovery the kit cost £200 it saved me going to a dealer twice for a diagnostic and reset so saved me at least £100 and i sold it for £150.

Be very careful buying any sort of non MB diagnostic equipment they can lead you up the wrong garden path of diagnosis you go and get the relevant parts and still have the same fault.

I have a Mercedes Star and i go out mobile to customers and mainly back street garages even MB specialists. Some have already used their diagnostics and i then use mine and it comes up with something completely different.

You also have to be quiet educated on the systems you are diagnosing and have to have some product knowledge. Trust me you could get caught out.

If you have any troubles or questions tap me a line.

The 210's have two connectors 16 pin in the engine bay fuse box and under the drivers kick panel.

Do you mean the W210 E430 only. Most W210 just have the 38pin socket under the bonnet still.

If it has a OBDII socket it will be in the recess next to the bonnet release lever.

For a cheap code reader try HERE.

The later 210 have them in the interior by the bonnet pull, what i was saying was that on the change over year they were in both under the bonnet and by the release lever.

Merc Diagnostics

Hello,

I noticed that you all seem concerned about diagnostics for the W140 (and probably other models) I have a W140 S500 1993 and was also worried about not being able to do anything apart from changing the windscreen washer fluid. Following a major problem with the car that cost me around £1500 for a garage not to repair I started looking for diagnostics so at least I could be better informed and maybe not fall into that trap again. I tried several things that were supposed to work, but none of them seemed to do anything but give me hours of fun trying to make them work. Just recently, I came accross a PDA style diagnostic computer that claimed to do all sorts of things. As it was not too expensive I gave it a try. I plugged it in, (of course I didn't read the instructions first) and selected the S500 W140 and it gave me more information than I would ever use. It connects to and reads all the ECU's and provides ECU information etc. Does loads of actuator tests, loads of diagnostics, controls a/c. etc. etc. and even has something like a trouble shooter. I am now trying it on my W124 300E as I have a driveability problem, it does pretty well every MB (& BMW) cars made in the last 20 or so years.
