After many years I finally took the Mac plunge some months ago and I have to say I am, mostly, very happy with them.

However, I've recently joined one of these book listening sites (they are wonderful!) but disappointingly the majority of their titles don't like Macs.

Indeed with a PC one can stream, but not with a Mac. The other problem is that a lot of the downloadable books are in WMA files.

Whilst I think there are fairly easy work arounds on the Mac for the .WMA files, the problem is that the site uses OverDrive Meda and the files (I guess for DRM reasons) arrive in .odm format. I've looked around but cant see a Mac solution.

Has anyone come across this problem? Is there a solution? I did wonder about dual booting the Mac and putting Windows 7 on it, I'd prefer not to though.

Thanks o techie ones!!! :D

Running a google, there seems to be quite a few options out there to convert the files to something Mac friendly.

Believe me, if it were that easy I would have done it by now. I've spent four days on this, googled aplenty and come up with zilch. Hence my appeal to the techno-savvy guys here.

The solution is to convert your Mac into a usable computer by adding Windows!

I know that sounds a bit petty, but I do software support and every day I talk to half a dozen people who tell me how great their Mac is, except it cant run the software they want to use - but somehow not being able to actually use it for its proposed purpose doesnt stop it being "great".

"I've just bought this Ferrari - its the best car in the world!!! Its fabulous!!"

"Yup, but we need to take the 3 kids on holiday in the car..."

"............oh"

Meanwhile, I think this might be what your after, tho i'm not well versed on Overdrive so apologies if its a bum steer.

In defence of Macs, this is the first software problem I've had. I think dual boot with Win7 will be the only solution until Apple resolve their licence issues.

Thanks for the link, but I already have the OverDrive Media Console loaded on Mac. The problem is it will not play WMA files. Even with flip4mac there's a problem as OverDrive delivers the WMA books in their .odm format.

For those 'dissing the Mac about non-playback of Windows DRM files think about it for a little while ...

It's just M$ doing what they are good at - retaining the platform.

I'm guessing nobody knows a work around......

I've no experience with odm files, so can't help here, I'm afraid. The only thing I may suggest is: rather than dual-boot, have you considered virtual machine? Oracle (Sun) Virtual Box is excellent - I have been using it for quite a while on my Linux and Macs, as I need to have access to CorelDRAW files created over the last 20 years ... I also use TrueTransparency add-on, so windows look like OSX too - i.e. controls are on the left and appear as normal Mac 'traffic light' type :thumb: Once the VM is running and open on say, desktop 6 to [almost] full screen, leaving just the dock visible, you can't even tell it's not OSX

Many thanks, I'll look into that.
