What's up with Mercedes? BMW and Audi produce diesel convertibles, why isn't Mercedes making them too? They are losing out on froogle customers like me :-))

CLK 220 please! :D

I agree!! I really wanted a diesel convertible after selling my CLK 200K coupe and had no choice but to look elsewhere! I wonder why MB haven't put even the 320 cdi in the convertible?

Won't be long, a couple more years?

BMW and Audi do already, diesels are more popular than ever - surely they'll need to follow market trends and customer demands.

Maybe the new CLK will see a change in thinking?

They have built that beautiful concept SL with the twin turbo diesel :)

The CLK is no more, back to "E" naming..

Really? I hate the new E class shape

The new Audi's looks great, but I really hate front wheel drive and 4 wheel drive is silly for a city car...

I'm hoping Mercedes keep at least a little soul and don't put a diesel in a convertible.

The car community seems to be merging into 1 giant like for like company but with different badges.

Dave!

Indeed, DC insider. So why not have a word with those on the inside at Milton Keynes to make sure the new E-class cabriolet is sold with a diesel lump in the UK! There are no technical reasons, obviously (unlike say the GLK debacle).

They stink. The VW technology doesnt stink.

Stop queue jumping

I want my S-class estate :)

So who metioned an S class estate? Apart from John for the last few years;)

I know diesels are getting more refined but I still think that Mercedes are right not to go with 'wood burning' soft tops!
All those I have driven have been blighted by the dreaded diesel rattle and the faint whiff of diesel exhuast which are hard to hide when you are in the open air.
I certainly was glad of a petrol engine in the SLK, and feel the same about my motorcycles however much I am a staunch supporter of diesels in closed cars...and S Class estates:D

yuk you lot are sick, bad enough having a weasel in a car at all let alone in something where you can hear and smell it more than normal.

No, a diesel drop-top won't suit everyone. But the fact is Mercedes are missing out on sales by not offering it. Commercial madness.

Sadly, I am no longer at MK. I took a job outside of the motor trade just over a year ago (I really should have changed my user name!).

However, I would be surprised if MB did not introduce a diesel model when the new E-Class cabriolet is launched.

i'm probably the poorest person here, i'd rather drive less in a petrol than use a lorry engine in car. :P

Not all of us own petrol stations to fill up our V8 engines! :D
Many convertibles do limited mileage though ... the annual fuel cost for my SL500 is a fraction of what we spend on diesel for our 1.9 litre Audi.

Even on similar mileages, with diesel being so much more expensive than petrol I suspect the economy advantage would be slight. I've mentioned before that it costs me more to drive somewhere in the Vito than in the SL ... even using V-Power in the SL and ordinary diesel in the van.

deisel cars cost more in the first place as well everytime i read anything about cost comparisons it seems like the first ownerr never gets there money back unless they keep the car for years and do a pretty high milage.

Last series 5th gear tested a petrol (Yaris i think) against a deisel and the petrol came out quite a lot cheaper to run.

I am quite looking forward to a Diesel E coupe/cabrio.. but im not quite sure why though..

If the tractor vibrations are eliminated, then in the long run value should prevail with the Diesel.

We run a fleet of BMWs and C class diesels, and we get astonishing miles to the gallon, and some of the cars have near enough 500,000 miles, and still going strong on original engines, and some on second gear boxes..

Durability of the old is not assured in the future, unless the sturdyness of the old school cars is back...

will have to wait and find out..
