Oil leak

I was concerned to find some oil in an electrical connection just below the air filter housing, so starting pulling things to bits to find the source. Let me explain. A W203 C220CDI 2004 is the car in question.

The large diameter pipe from the front of the air filter box has a smaller diameter breather hose that travels up and connects to the top of the engine near the oil filler cap. Just as this breather hose tees off the larger diameter hose is an electrical plug. This was found to be oily.

Took things to bits and found that the large diameter air pipe as it connects to the MAF in front of the air filter box was all clean and dry. However disconnecting the other end where it connected under the air filter housing is a silvery intake and this had some fresh oil in there. Not exactly loads of the stuff but fresh oil none the less.

As you can perhaps tell I am none too wise as to the technical aspects here. What exactly is the silver intake directly below air filter housing?

I have since cleaned everything up and reconnected all pipes and connections. I guess a picture would have helped you guys but never thought of that at the time.

Obviously I shall keep an eye on this however, should I be concerned; do I need to take the car into a garage sooner rather than later. The car itself is running great I only wanted to check the washer bottle level. Isn't it always the way.

Any advice please. Thanks

Having searched thru this forum I believe the turbo unit is below the air filter housing and this is where the oil was coming from.

The leak was around the breather hose. So is it normal to have small amounts of oil in the turbo? The breather hose was not blocked.

Having seen some of the prices quoted in relation to turbo units I am getting worried:eek:

The turbo's do not give many problems,, diesels are not my line but its more often breathing issues,,If I get a chance tonight I will see what I can find

right , and they tend to blow slop a bit farther down the tract, a little puff of blue/white smoke would give you the first clue, and slop wouldn't tend to ever come back unless you have a blocked CAT.

No smoke from the car at all - hopefully this is good. Will be sure to check though.

Could the breather oil trap be the problem. Would this let oil travel down the breather tube into the turbo air intake?

Anyone know the part number can't see one on it, perhaps need to remove it to see.

Took this image from another thread; this is not from my car though it looks the same

What you are describing is perfectly normal. There is nothing to worry about.

So a small amount of oil in the turbo intake is normal. The oily deposits on the exterior of breather hoses and around the breather oil trap is not unusual either.

Do I just need to clean the engine compartment more often?

The car is running great at the moment and long may it continue!!

Absolutly nothing to worry about
