I’m lining up for an oil change soon and as I’m looking at ~ £100 just for the oil who is doing deals on oil at the moment, on line or around west London?

Castrol is my flavour of choice, Edge or Magnatec, not decided yet.

:bannana:

National Tyres do full oil change for about £40 - £50 with Castrol oil.

Costco do Castrol oil cheap if you want just the oil and they also had an extra 20% off when I was there last month, not sure if the offers still on.

makro also do offers on castrol from time to time

£100 for an oil change? In my day a £100 would buy a house and servants quaters

Costco do Mobil One for £28 for 5 litres.

If your set on castrol I would got with the "Edge" rather than the Magnatec. Magnatech is only semi-synth (unless it is the Ford specific 5w-30 variant, but that doesn't meet the MB spec).

Magnatec does not meet MB spec, go for Mobil

Costco have Castrol too - not on offer though - I was there last night.

From memory Magnatec was £16.99 and Edge was £22.99 I think (both plus VAT).

I agree. I was at Costco this afternoon looking for an Arcan low level jack and I noticed how expensive the oils were. They didn't have a jack either.

This was the Mobil 1 price in Costco in June 2010. A lot more expensive now.

Still, I got my usual 2no 6-packs of Tork tissue rolls at £11.55 + Vat per pack, so worth the visit after all. :thumb:

The S210 E320 does use two containers of oil but that does not come to £100 even if using Mobil 1. Imo the older the engine, the better the oil needs to be: engine wear. False economy. And Mobil 1 does last better than any other equivalent synthetics I've used, for over 20 years.

I must admit to having the garage do it these days because there's no way I can extract the old stuff from the Merc, needs a car lift to get at the undershields to get at the drain plug. That gets combined with the regular service.

My local parts shed is asking very nearly £50 a jug for quality oil hence this thread. my oil is not due for a change, but I have just got the car and I’m getting it to a known condition, the air filter was shabby before replacement and other tells make me think I should change the oil. I like working on my cars, the reward is in that I know the work is done properly, and I don’t take shortcuts, the belly pan is coming off and the oil will be drained hot, and the new fitters will be OEM. The car has a recent service logged but having just had the belly plate off they must have vaced the oil out, poor practice in my book.

B&Q have some Castrol on special offer - £19.98 for 4L Magnatec Fully Synthetic Ford spec. Not sure what else they had.

Opie Oils (Oilman) have a 25% off sale this weekend, that's 10% discount for mbclub members plus 15% summer sale discount. Includes all Castrol.

£50 is scary, and not normal, go elsewhere.

First synth I ever used was made by Esso. Since then I've used various good oils including Magnatec and semi-synths and Halford's own synth. The Volvo always got full-synth, the other car(s) got whatever.

I noticed the was a distinct improvement in performance after every oil change. The longest lasting improvement was with Mobil 1. The cheapest oils would "muck up" early and turn black soonest indicating that their detergent qualities had gone and their lubricating molecules were getting chewed up (literally minced by the engine).

As alluded to earlier, that Volvo 245 did very high mileage, I was about fourth owner but had it for almost 20y, and the service book indicated it always received synth, so I kept with it. The engine was running sweet as a nut when we parted comany having done over 330k with no major work done on the motor (It was struck whilst stationary by an ERF heavy tow truck, it was still drivable but BER) I think it had a scheduled cambelt and sparkplugs.

The MB is fairly low mileage for year. It had a non-Mobil MB-spec synth first time I had it serviced but Mobil 1 0W-40 this time. There is a difference, the Mobil 1 is still glossy, wheras the non-Mobil had turned thin and watery long before this point. Performance-wise hard to notice because the E320 has a lot more in reserve than the old Ovlov.

I had my indie flush the engine last time because I did not like the look of the muck in the oil. Sometime a simple drain leaves muck in the sump however I would not recommend regular flushing because it can cause leaks (it's thin and invasive). They supplied the Mobil at about the price of the cheapest in town, and gave me the leftover in the cannister.

Okay so I now have 8L of Castrol Edge 5w-40 en route, via eBay, £62.50 delivered, better than any of the sheds around me, and exactly the grade I wanted. Next, to source the filter and some reasonable weather.;)

Then the question is the sump plug, is it a standard hex bolt head, or one of the "other" drive heads that they have on it? I forgot to look the last time I had the belly plate off. Does anyone know offhand what the key type/size is for an OM613 engine (E320)?
