w203 c class has come up with a warning on the dash display to add 1.5ltrs of oil.its done 26000 mls and had b service 5000 mls ago.no smoke at startup or when revving.the oil is checked electronically with the computer ,i cant find a dipstick.i cant see it using 1.5ltrs of oil and dont want to add that amount incase its a mistake or a faulty sensor and end up blowing the engine due to overfilling.can the oil level be checked in any other way..
advise needed

cheers all

If you go to someone who specialises in Mercs they will have a workshop dipstick to check the level, or if you are keen you can buy one from MB or some of the specialist MB tool suppliers

Possible that the oil fill at your last service was a bit on the low side.

On an E class putting the ignition key to I with the display set to external temperature then pressing the mileage reset button quickly three times bring up a hidden voltage menu. Arrow up then gives a data screen with an oil level readout that becomes live on putting key to II position. (If you then start the engine can see oil level in the sump drop as it circulates around)

Hopefuly somebody can confirm or deny if this (or something similar) works on a C class.

Using this method this very evening I checked oil level and topped up with 0.6litres in advance of a long slog starting early tomorrow

A mate of mine had the same problem, he then took back to the dealer and they topped up the oil for free.

You cant use a dipstick when it is not supplied on the engine as the tube is not fitted

My 2001 W203 C220 Cdi had a dipstick tube but no dipstick, it was hidden under the engine cover

My 2004 w203 has a tube for a dipstick but no dipstick. Only a cap on the tube. I have also had the same message to add 1L of oil and my service was 2000m ago.

Off to halfords today to buy some oil.

I agree that the oil was added at the service, but not checked before final release to you, So the Dealer should top it up properly for you for free.;)

does anyone know if the workshop dipstick for auto box is also graduated correctly for engine oil?

I have an autobox one, its a very long flexible thing...

all mb owners read

i called into mb whitefield today to have the oil level checked also to make sure it wasnt an electronic problem and couldnt believe what i was told.the service dept told me if an mb vehicle uses upto 1 ltr of oil per 800mls it is acceptable.so i said if a vehicle does roughly 10000 mls between services its acceptable to add 1ltr of oil on 12 occasions!!,if this was the case i,d be getting a new engine.
they said it was due to the kompressor bearings ,above my head.
after a 10 minute heated discussion they added 1 ltr free of charge.
does anyone know the part number for the dipstick for a w203

cheers all

hi baz my diesel only uses 1/2 lit of oil every 8000 .... wish it used more then i could drop loads on that bloody rusty plate ...:D

mine uses about 1 ltr every 8 - 10 k

I agree that is usual for a 320CDI. Both mine, E and CLS have done that at the first 9/10000 miles when the first service was @ 17000. Then next services 11/12000 miles did not need topping.

I still say it was not topped up properly at the service.

I find that some mercs use oil. Not all, but some. Even two cars the same can vary in amouint of oil they have use. It depends on engine wear, leaks etc.

The oil useage limit (official) is 1L/1000km (1L/769.23miles)

If any car of mine was using oil at that rate I would want a new engine.

But you did say "LIMIT", which is a bit deceiving as it is of course the Maximum usage acceptable, not the norm.
