OM606 Starting problem

Need to get my W124 E300d sorted out as i have noticed that on the last half dozen times that i've started it it has taken alot more effort. I have to pump the accelerator and keep the starter going before it catches and maintains enough revs to not stall, at the same time alot of smoke comes out of the exhaust for about 5 seconds before it settles to a semi-lumpy idle before eventually settling down to a nice smooth idle. It passed it's MOT last month with no problems but it does tend to not get used very much. Any ideas? I do have another E300d which is perfect so i can swap components around one at a time to see if it solves it. Thanks in advance

Bearing in mind I can only talk a good breakdown fix here goes.

Sounds like you have air in the fuel system somewhere.
Could be fuel draining back to the tank when it is stood for elongated periods of time.
If the glowplug light is working as normal then the glowplugs should be ok.
The smoke from the exhaust will be "overfueling"
I now prepare for "incoming" from the assembled qualified mechanics:eek: who are forum members.

Good luck with it.

Are the glow-plugs working. An OM606 will start without them...eventually, but it won't be happy.

I'd go along with fuel draining beck to the tank, i believe your engine is self bleeding, however i would check the glow plugs first as its easier then looking for air getting in to the system. that said i one way fuel valve can be fitted to stop fuel draining back.

The glow plug light comes on for about 3 seconds and then goes out, so i'm assuming the glowplugs are fine but i might check them now, fingers crossed they don't snap.

No need to take them out to check them.
