I have a July 2010 ML 300, which is on 265/45 r20 ET 56 and want to put some smaller, perhaps 17 inch ones on

What difference to positioning will these wheels make pls, E17x 8.5J 52 DOT

then I can try find some tyres for them

Cheers

You have not given enough info.

We know your wheel is 20" with an ET of 56 but how wide is it?

The new wheel will need a 235.65.17 tyre I would guess, and I would think 8.5" wide rim is fine, but need to know the width of your current 20" wheel to work out whether the 6mm difference in offset.

I would guess that the current 20" wheel is 9" wide, and this would give your new 17" wheel 12mm more clearance on the strut side and sit in exactly the same position on the outside edge.

Just to add, if the 20" wheel is 8.5" wide this will still be OK, 6mm clearance on the strut side and will stick out 6mm more on the arch side, which will be fine on a W164.

You could also use 245.65.17 tyres as well, just that 235.65.17 is an official Merc tyre size for the W164.

You also need to consider the centre bore size and the bolt pattern and what bolts you need, some take M12 bolts, some take M14 bolts and then different lengths as well.

Have a look on alloywheelsdirect to see what bolts they say for your wheels.
