Whilst bumping my head on the bonnet of my S211 during an oil check, a colleague of mine stood nearby said 'Why don't you open it further?'. I replied that it was open as far as it would go. He then explained that his dad has had E class mercs for years and they all had a secondary catch that allows the bonnet to go almost vertical so we checked and it has!

For those that don't know the catches are at the hinge and its a two man job. just before the bonnet reaches its limit depress the spring catch on each hinge (small spring loaded button) and this will alow the bonnet to open fully....I dont know if this is on all models but I would presume so.
.....mind your fingers!

It's got it on a W202 as well... with some practice you can do it alone too ;) You need to wedge one in the open position using the bonnet's weight to hold it there, and then do the other side :)

Most Mercedes have this.

Always read the handbook!

A one person sequence so far as I know and very useful indeed, used to use it a lot. Miss it on other cars.

on the 124 too and one handed operation.

Always use this feature, gives excellent access for cleaning the wiper well below the windscreen

One man operation on the 203 :)

Yep, same on w208, just the catch on the one side though

Definatley a one person job, the catch positions are offset so one will hold in the released position while you go around the other side to release the other :)

you dont think MB would design a bonnet that needed 2 men to open it do you, come on this is german engineering and MB is german engineering at its best :D

Took your advice KNU7S and read my handbook from cover to cover. Result was no mention of any button to press or knob to turn. So ignored your well meaning advice and just lifted the bonnet.

Result is my bonnet will open to near vertical without doing anything other than lifting it higher than usual. Another scientific advancement from Mercedes for owners of W204's. :thumb::D

W204, just allow bonnet to raise on hydraulic struts, when stopped just push to vertical, simples :thumb:
Not so simple is getting it back down if your'e short ar5e like me!

Edit : sorry, didn't read all of above post

Please remember - with the bonnet upright if you're working on a lift then take the height of the garage into account...
