Also, on the back page of the service book usually, there is a list of option codes.

In general terms, and for any car. just ask your dealer. They should be able to look up the VIN number and get a printout of what the car was ordered with. I've done it on previous cars.

Email me (sales@comand.co.uk) your chassis number and I will get you the official datacard from the Mercedes database which will show all the option codes and their true description.

Russian site doesn't appear to be very good at interpreting the codes. Put my VIN number in and some of the codes are unknown ( i.e. no text) and in some cases the description iswrong.

I agree. It concerns me, but it's there in the public domain so I'm pretty sure the people that want such info already have access to it.

We've had it on here several times so I felt it was safe to post it again. That doesn't mean I don't share your concern.

Does it really matter though.? They could just as easily get the VIN from your car when parked.

I take reasonable steps with regard to security but don't lose any sleep over it.

But your VIN is clearly visible through the windscreen every time the car is parked somewhere. And you need to produce all sorts of ID to get a new key via a dealership ... not just know the reg. & VIN.

We had this the other day with Donza's car. VIN checker said Halogen lights, parts side said Xenon and AMG wheels.

Datacard agreed with the parts side, Xenons and AMG rims.

The Russian site has never been known for its accuracy and as soon as I saw the halogen comment I guessed where this information was obtained.

The back page of the service booklet is the ideal source for this information.

Agreed, but someone snooping around your car on the drive and noting down the VIN is more likely to attract attention than someone making an inquiry on t'internet using a registration number they've seen

I adopt the same principle. What does concern me though is the sheer quantity of information about all of us that's in the Public Domain and so easily accessible to the scrotes. The genie is out of the lamp and you can't put it back, I'm afraid.
