Just got a call from the garage where I have left my car to get the headgasket done to be told the head is cracked in several places. I popped down and sure enough next to the valve heads there is 3 cracks.
So instead of £750 for the job its going to cost £2000 which is a big ouch in my pocket.

Be careful on this mate.If the cracks are between each valve it could be very possible to repair them if its an alloy head,I have done this repair on several cars before ranging from VW to jaguars.

Ouch indeed - and for a car as old as that (though lovely I'm sure) you wouldn't want to be splashing out for a brand new MB head surely. A recon/reman unit with 12 months guarantee would no doubt save a few petrol tokens.

Not only are there a few cracks but where the gasket had blown the water channels have been worn away too. The price for an original Merc head was £1800 so am getting a german one for £1200 which is a bit better but yes still v steep.

Ouch...sorry to hear that. Thats why I am selling mine, before the bills start coming in and there it still has a little bit of warranty left.

Got my baby back the other day and she is running like a dream very smooth and responsive with not a hint of smoke or the recent plumes of steam.
Since I have spent so much on her recently plan to keep her for a while longer esp since summer is nearing. :)

Glad to hear of a good result . . .

BTW ;) reminds me of what my mate said about his first wife . . .

To avoid this happening again, make sure the car is only run on MB coolant and is run at the right concentration....the MB stuff is specifically formulated to stop corrosion of the aluminium heads whereas many cheaper coolants do not have this level of protection.

I would also give your coolant system the once over to make sure that there are no leaks, thus avoiding the need to keep topping up the coolant system which does eventually lead, in most cases to the car running with a weak coolant mix.

Cheers Vlad will do. I ensured they flushed out the system when the head was being done and as u can expect am watching the whole system like a hawk for the next couple of weeks to make sure there are no leaks whatsoever water or oil.
