C180k '03
'03 C180k sat down this evening. Will start but won't fire and dies after about 10s. Error codes as per title. Any help appreciated.

I'd hold on a bit for a more educated opinion than mine but if it is indeed the CPS, then yes, it normally isnt a hard job to replace.

Thanks, panic easing.!

hard to say without a better reference, but your codes point to a camshaft sensor or postion fault. have you had any work done to the positioner or sensor lately?

Not that I know of. I had the car serviced on Wednesday and Thursday evening this happened. I have the guy who did the work coming out to take a look. He did a routine 10k service and changed the pads back and front. Shouldn't have been near any sensors.

P0010 “A” Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)

P0325 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

Whats the mileage on the car? Usually the car will still run with a faulty cam sensor, does it sound OK when it fires, and does it sound normal when turning over?

80k - Start the car and it spins but isn't firing. Have had a MB specialist look at it and he reckons it may have slipped a notch on the timing belt.. will need to take off the head to determine the extent the damage.. not good

Hold on, did he really say timing belt?

If so, dont let him near your car.

I dont think it possible to slip a notch on the timing chain... not unless it was either really really worn or someone has recently had it all apart and re-assembled it incorrectly.

what does it sound like?

Get a compression test done and see what the readings are, some diagnostic systems can do this just by plugging in, but easy to do the old fashioned way too. That should give you an idea if the chain has stretched/become slack.

Yes, sorry he said chain. When I start it it sounds like it is spinning for about 10s without firing and then shuts down.

does it sound normal when spinning over, -can you hear a compression stroke, or is a constant fast spin??

Constant fast spin i'd say.

OK, going on the codes, and your description, it does sound like the chain has slipped/jumped/stretched....

I'd get someone to compression test it to confirm, but sounds like the head will have to come off, sorry!:(

If its out 2 teeth or less you can get away with just putting a timing chain in.
There about 110 pounds for the chain,i do two of these a week very common

Is there a risk of further damage within. I haven't been able to run it, but in trying to might there be more damage done?
