The parking brake on wifey's CLK needs adjusting (I think).

The symptoms are that when you release it, the brake releases but the warning light stays on. The only way to overide the annoying beeping and the bright red lights in the instruments is to (by hand) pull up on the foot pedal whilst also pulling the brake release lever on the dash. Even then, going up or down a hill can sometimes set it off again.

Does anyone know if this is a simple repair/adjustment? Can it be trusted to my (usually competent) local garage rather than pay MB at least £100/hour + VAT? (Although I would of course get the pleasure of sampling some very fine coffee whilst there ;) ).

Hopefully I'll get this right - lift the rear seat squib and you should find a plate on top of the compensator which is where the adjustment is . If you can turn a spanner , do it your self - an easy one.

Take the slack up untill there is no free play on the pedal

Only adjust 170 in the link, the 202 had a return spring, Do not touch the equaliser

thanks for this great info.

Last week end I've greased this component on my W203 please my questions are:

1) I've utilized WD40 but some friend are saying me that it will last for few weeks that is much better to utilize a sort o grease spray. Is it correct?

2) W202 and W203 mechanism look the same from the well known site (detali.ru), is it true?

3) I hear 5-6 clics before the brake is well applied if I well remember on previous W202 need only 3-4, but since it will work well I didn't change anyfing. I was not able to identify how to operate the item 170, I don't remember now, is it a big screw to operate directly?

4) I hear creaking sound coming form the rear wheel when I well apply the footbrake, is it normal?

thanks a lot

Marco:)

The other thing is, are the rear parking shoes past their sell by date, they are self adjusting up to the point where there is no more adjustment

There should be 5 clicks with a force of 170n at the pedal

If you look through the aperture under the seat there is a nut at the rear, under the equaliser, two turns equal 1 click on the pedal

Be careful that you don't over adjust - if you do when you try to release the brake you will disturn the little bit of bent tin that serves as the pawl release on the parking brake pedal - a right 'mare to put right.

They really should wear , though the drum does fester a bit and might wear the shoulders of the shoes.

thanks a lot!

car have only 40000km and I'm quite sure parking brake pads are quite new.

Please could you please confirm me that WD40 is OK, or is better to dismount again and utilize a sort of grease spray!

PS: how can I realize a load of 170N on my leg:rolleyes: :D

I've bought a grease spray do you suggest I dismount again to spray over the WD40? Or is it ok with WD40?:)

WD 40 is not a lubricant, it is a release agent, plenty of PTFE and silicon sprays out there, they are clean and never dry

WD40 does not contain any long term lubrication, if its all working freely you can leave it, but PTFE or Silicon would not do any harm

ok thanks!
