I'm considering px'ing my car but would like to know how exactly to go about it to get the best deal possible, ie get the most I can from my car and the car I want for less!

Any tips and advice on how to handle the dealer and questions etc?

Thanks, Gina.

Depends what you're p'xing against and the type of dealer you're looking to deal with. If a main dealer - you'll prob get a bog standard price for yours due to its age. You'll not have much bargaining power with it as they will just chuck it out to auction. Prob be better to sell it privately then go haggle in the screen price for the car you want.

If it's an indie that deals in cheaper cars then you might be in with slightly more luck - but not much as there's little profit for them in a car like yours. Sorry that sounds harsh but at that end of the market there's little room for manouvre.

I understand that, not harsh at all, it's the truth! I know I won't get back what I paid for it but I'd be quite happy to lose a little to get a younger car. I've always bought and sold privately before so px'ing is new to me! It's the hassle of advertising mine etc that I can't be doing with, but may well end up going this route.

Hmm, the $64,000 question. If I knew the answer to that one I'd have saved myself a fortune over the years... but anyway.

1. Most obvious - you'll always get more for your car if you sell it privately. Car dealers are in business to make money, and the bottom line is it will be *your* money.
2. Next most obvious - make sure your car is clean. Really clean, inside and out. Make the dealer think it's your pride and joy.
3. If it's got good provenance - full dealer history, a stack of bills an inch thick - take it with you and show the dealer. It'll make it easier for him to shift on and that all adds value.
4. I think - although I'm not certain - that you'll probably get a better price if you take it to a dealer who'll move it on from his forecourt, rather than through the trade. The reason being, if they carry a certain type of stock and take something that doesn't fit in in part ex, they'll just want it off the forecourt as soon as possible. That means selling on to another trader, and less profit than a retail disposal.
5. Make sure you switch the bulls**t deflector to maximum and have your brass neck at the ready when dealing with second hand car salesmen...;)

HTH

I would always advise against PXing if possible. You will always come out better off if you sell your existing car and approach the dealer as a straight cash customer (or as one seeking a loan).

Any good PX prices that a dealer offers are simply underwritten by a discount that he would have otherwise given you if you had pushed him. Furthermore, the discount would have exceeded the generosity of the PX amaount (if that makes any sense at all).

if it's a quick sale you need then play of dealers against each other. 53 plate 320 CLK coupe with 31K on clock and medium quantity of toys (no sat nav or sunroof but park sensors and 18" AMG III alloys). First dealer said £15K eventually the guy got an offer £16,750 by playing off 3 or four against each other.
Which I matched and now it's mine :)
Anyway - summary is - go around a fair few dealers if it's the instant sale u need otherwise private sale will get you most for the car.

When PXing all that matters is the final price you have to pay the dealer to drive away in the car you want. Another dealer may offer a higher part-ex but take less off the the car you're buying ... so you're no better off. It's the total deal that counts.

How many days would you have to go to work in order to recover the money that you would otherwise lose by not handling some of the inconvenience yourself. Look at the possible differences in cold hard cash and ask yourself whether you can earn that much money in the ten or so hours you will spend doing private deals.

That's why I wondered whether to try and get the best price off of the car I want first to see how low he would go and then bring in the subject of mine and try and get what I think is reasonable for it.

Thanks, I may end up selling privately, I have a friend who has been given first refusal so if he doesn't want it I'll go from there.

I take it your getting another MB?

What are you going to get?

My GF wants one. (amongst other things, horse box etc)

She drives a smart and has horse. Crap car nice horse. lol

She also wanted a Pick up too. So I bought the Caddy! lol

This is why the trader will usually give a poor trade in value, because it saves you hassle.

You can get good trade in value on an overpriced car, but will always pay dealer profit for convenience.

You need to know the value of your car before going into any deal, that way you have some bargaining power.
