Hi everyone,

Can anyone help with this one?

Picked up a tidy E350 coupe at a reasonable price. However, the passenger windscreen wiper only works sporadically, well hardly at all really. Not sure if this is an electrical or mechanical issue...thought it might be electrical as it did work briefly (so in my simple mind the mechanics must be OK).

I can't see how to easily access so i could have a look and can't find a fuse chart for the car to check if the passenger blade has a separate fuse etc.

I'm retired and don't want/have the money to put it into a dealership to have problems rectified so i would be grateful for any guidance.

TIA

Mike

So i had a word with a friend that builds camper vans....he said to try and move the non-working blade as, if it moved, it would indicate that the linkages had come off. The blade does move freely.

How do i get at the linkages guys? and is it something any of you have done or could send me a photo or description of how to rectify.

Most cars with two wipers have only one motor and a linkage drives them .

This is what a 2006 C class looks like ...before I cleaned it !

Not sure what yours looks like , but my guess is that it won't be much different .

Thanks @Petrol Pete, appreciate you taking the time to share the photos.

Not sure how i hadn't spotted the bar on the left hand side of the engine bay. From the photos i have attached it looks to me that there is a heat shield on my 2011 E350 coupe.

Does anyone know if this has to be removed or is there another way to access the passenger linkages. Is it a big job to remove the heat shield, any specialist tools required?

Grateful for any advice on this guys.wiper 1.jpgwiper2.jpgwiper3.jpg

You don't have to remove the heat shield.

Undo the bolts on top of the wiper links you can see (having prised off the plastic caps).
Remove the wipers and brackets with a puller! Don't try to wiggle them off or bodge it with something that isn't a puller, because you can damage the spindle, that could snap the spindle or prevent the wiper from biting properly when you refit it.

In fact, make sure the problem is the linkage under the scuttle panel, and not an issue with the wiper spindle!

Unclip (pull off) the rubber sealing strip.
Carefully unclip the black plastic scuttle panel (black grid mesh item) to reveal the linkages underneath. Watch out for washer lines clipped under the scuttle panel.

I'll leave this here:

You absolute legend, not only for taking the time to reply but for sharing the link to the puller tool (if you were buying one again which would you go for: Silverline or Neilsen)?

This is what amazes me about forums like this (although usually i'm on motorcycle ones) that people take the time to help others.

Thanks so much mate, really appreciate it.

Neilsen. The silverline isn't big enough 👍

(i found out after buying it; wished I'd bought the Neilsen straight off)

Top tip when removing the wiper arms - before you remove them, mark the rest position of the wiper blades on the windscreen with a couple of bits of tape or a chinagraph pencil. That way when you refit the arms you get them in the right position on the spindles.

Check if your car has a 'service position' for wiper blade removal . Someone on here will know.

The car puts the wipers in optimum position for safe removal. not sure myself which models have it.

+ 1 for using the correct puller to remove the wiper arms . NEVER prise them off.

Use a little smear of anti seize before replacing them on the spindle.
