Passenger Door Not Unlocking Properly

I'm hoping someone might have seen this problem before.
Whenever I try to remotely unlock the passenger door the knob (the one by the window) oscillates up and down a few times and then comes to rest in a position which is neither up nor down and the door remains locked forcing me to open the door using the inside handle. Sometimes if I press the unlock button a number of times the door will unlock. I get the same result when trying to lock the car except the knob usually comes to rest in the fully down position.
Does anyone know what's wrong and how to cure it? I'd like to get it done soon in case the mechanism seizes up. The car's a 2002 W203

It needs a new door lock. Its a mega common problem on 203's,209's,211's. I did one yesterday. You could probably fit it yourself its not very difficult.
