Last night I could hear some whiring and a kind of beep/squeaking coming from my Harddrive, the HD access light was flashing at the same time.

Then the PC froze and I have been unable to sucessfully boot it up again, I can get it onto the XP loading screen, then it restarts with 'Select boot mode' eg Safe mode etc.

When I first bought this PC of someone the old HD I was given did the above, and I ditched it thinking it was a result of it being an old HD.

As this has happened again to a newish HD (Seagate Barracuda 160gb) im thinking its the PSU?

Could this cause power surges etc?

Yep, cheap PSU's can cause havoc with hardware.

I'd also like to point out that it seems HDD's dont seem to last that long nowadays.... A year or so for a laptop drive and two to three for %.25" drives seem to be the norm.

Make sure you do your backups is all I can say.

It seems like a good PSU though, if I replace it, I take it the HD would still be ok? as it attemps to load up windows ok?
