Pela Pump..

Mine works fine. 6L capacity I think.
With my oil filter mounted on the top of the engine it saves jacking the car up.

I always think its not quite a thorough job. There is nothing like getting the engine warm, getting the car up in the air and watching all the old oil all drain out - if you have time. That said the last oil change on my 300D was done with a Pela Pump. It saves time, mess and having to jack the old girl up. For the next change though its going up in the air (I have the oil changed the oil every 5k, probably a bit of an over kill at 205K miles) I find it very hard to think it is "right" to do a topside oil change only. I'll come round in the end I'm sure. In the end its a piece of cake with a Pela.

just to add - even if sucking the oil out, the engine needs to be warmed first of all

I used mine to freshen up the atf but only got three litres out…..was expecting at least four

Excellent piece of kit. If the car has been subjected to regular oil changes throughout its life and the sump's not filled with sludge then I reckon they are as good as the drain method. Its how most main dealers do it after all! If there's evidence of years of accumulated crud in there through neglected servicing then I would be inclined to use the drain method.

Totally agree.

When I worked on boats you couldn't get beneath the sumps so always sucked out the oil. Boat engines are worked far harder than cars!
As Grober says though, if the engine's been allowed to sludge up then sump plug or even whole sump removal is best.
Modern oils though are not prone unless badly abused.

i bought one a few years ago, have only used it once, but done the job.

We have one in our workshop but only for cars that dont have a drain plug.

There is nothing as good as draining out of the bottom... Why fight a great invention by Mr Newton..

I usually leave mine to drain for at least an hour after warming the engine thoroughly. Also its worth leaving the oil to drain whilst you change the filter as a lot more oil comes out of the bottom when you remove the oil filter housing.

Don't be tempted to get the el cheapo Silverline version. What a waste of money. I bought one to attempt to remove an excess litre of oil kwik fit kindly added, and even with the engine warm it was useless. It sounds like the original Pela is a much better solution.

Yes I have and do. Excellent piece of kit. Just about to suck out my Pajero's oil this morning using the Pela.

Job done. get the engine nice & hot first. Check the temperature by resting your bare arm against the top of the radiator or the rocker cover. The ferocity of the swear words that you have screamed out in agony will equate to the temperature of the engine. In my case I called the car illegitimate using the anglo saxon variant. That means that the engine was very very hot.

Suck the oil out then leave for a few minutes and have another go it will pick the dregs (I read similar in a porn mag once).

Replace filter and Bob's your Aunty.
