Phone not recognised in cradle

C220 Cdi Sport, 2006
I have just bought a C220 Cdi Sport, 2006 reg which I am attempting to connect to my Nokia 6230i mobile phone. The car has the right cradle, Part No: B6 787 5846 which has phone model 6230i printed on the back.
After fitting the phone into the cradle, the messages still say NO PHONE and I cannot figure out how to get it to recognise that the phone is there.
I have searched the many past threads about phones but cannot find anything about this. Am I missing something, is there another step that I need to take, or do I need to synch the handset to the system somehow?
As I am using the intended phone for this originally supplied MB cradle I was expecting it to go straight ahead and connect.
Any help here would be very much appreciated.

p.s. Searching through this MB Club members site it seems awesome and I am so pleased I have found it.

Your phone cradle may not be compatible with the system in the car . Not saying it isn't but maybe hopefully some one will put you right , and welcome to the group

The connectors can be a bit iffy.
Clean the contacts on the phone with a rubber and insert/remove the handset a couple of times.

Thanks guys, the cradle is the right one fitted by MB at new and used by the previous owner. I have been using my phone in another car's cradle so know that it's connections are good.

I use a Nokia 6300 in the correct cradle in my 08 S204 with Comand and telephone pre-wiring, and Comand only recognises "Convenience Phone", when I try to authorise the Nokia it asks for a code, and I've never been able to suss that, so I've no access to the address book. However, the phone and hands free operate fine!

We have iphone cradles, and although they are integrated through the factory wiring kit, it only takes power from the wiring. The signal is transmitted from handset to cradle (not COMAND) via Bluetooth.

Shot in the dark! Do a search for bluetooth devices from your phone whilst it's docked in the cradle in the car, and see if if picks up a bluetooth device which might be the cradle.

Just a thought.

Does your 6230i have the necessary 3.40 version SW (software)?

Presume the label on the back of your cradle is the same as this one...

I think you can check on the version by entering *#0000#

Thanks Mike and Bobby. I seldom use the phone in the car, it picks up incoming calls perfectly through Comand, and if I want to make a call, I stop, take the phone out of the cradle, initiate the call then return the phone to the cradle - and the outgoing call comes through Comand!

Thanks guys
My cradle label is almost identical to your picture except that it does not have the actual versions listed alongside the models. My phone actually has version 3.88 so should be fine.
I will try searching for a bluetooth connection to see if my phone is seeing that, but am not sure how that will take us forward.

Don't you think the difference between the 3.88 and 3.40 versions could be the problem?

3.88 isn't listed for any compatible phones.

I have no idea about that, except that with most electronics more recent versions usually accomodate all previous ones, at least from the phone point of view.
I know nothing about the cradle I have except that it says it accepts Nokia 6230i, so I would have expected it to be ok. It says nothing on my cradle about it being for certain versions only.
What listing are you refering to?

I have checked that my phone is switched on for bluetooth, but am not sure exactly how to search for other bluetooth devices on it.
This MB system appears to be way unnecessarily complex, I had a simlilar system on my Renault when I took it over and I just dropped my Nokia into the existing cradle and off it went fully operational. But anyway I am here to try to fix the MB, but it does not look favourable to me at this point, with all the threads on here and few owners finding a fix from what I see. Even if I could get it to detect my phone, there seems to be a strong likelyhood that it would ask me for a PIN which I do not have.

Although as a new owner I like the solid quality build of the MB, I have yet to discover how reliable it will be and whether it requires any less repaires than other makes, and hope that I can get used to the high tappet noise these MB diesels make at low revs for such an expensive quality car.

But back to the phone problem, I appreciate you guys efforts to help and hope that someone will read my thread who has a solution.
I like the buddy crown on here and feel I have an immediate circle of MB owners around me - thank you for that guys!

It's been a while since I used a Nokia, so I wasn't sure exactly how to do it either, so I googled it for you - page 64 of your phone manual should reveal all:

Search for audio enhancements should detect the cradle.

It's a different cradle but this manual for the iPhone may help you understand the general process:

Thanks Bobby Dazzler
Tried getting the phone to search using 'search for audio enhancements' both with phone in the car and then with phone in the cradle, but found nothing. This seemed a good idea so disappointing it could not find the cradle.
So what might this suggest?

I don't think it tells anything. The Nokia 6230i cradle does not work via bluetooth, the phone has wired connectivity for car kit operation.

Thanks Diesel Benz,
I have to say I thought that but have read some stuff which suggests a bluetooth connection as Bobby Dazzler referred to, but this may be with newer systems such as W204 models.
Do you have any ideas on how I might move forward with resolving this.

A 2006 W203 should have the socket for a bluetooth adaptor in place, the same socket that you are plugging the Nokia cradle into. AFAIK there were phone specific cradles and bluetooth adapters available.

If you want to follow the bluetooth route you will need to buy the bluetooth adaptor and a compatible bluetooth smartphone.

My last two samsung phones have found and paired with my adapter easily, but most are compatible. (You will need a code to enter to complete the pairing but it will be in the instructions, but if not it's 62872 the code BobbyDazzler mentioned earlier.

The following link is to pictures of the socket and the bluetooth adapter.
Usually some on fleabay. Viseo also make a compatible one but make sure to check it's the correct one as earlier Mercs used a different phone system.

Might be an idea to see if you can try someone elses first in case you have a fault in the wiring.

I would reset the phone control unit first, then test again. Pulling the fuse is the easiest way to reset the control unit (fuse diagram says which fuse).

If the control unit is alive, it could be a connector issue either at the UHI-connector side or the phone to cradle connector. Both should be cleaned well, pull the adapter and push it properly back a few times.

If the car still does not recognise the phone, it would indeed be useful to swap parts from another car as suggested above. Or you could test your cradle and your phone in another car that has the same UHI connector.

I do not want to go the bluetooth route at this point in time, just trying to get the hardwired system working. My car has the socket in the armrest and the correct cradle for the Noki 6230i.
What is the best way to clean the pins, I have tried pushing the phone and cradle in and out several times, and gave them a brush with a toothbrush.
I will have a look for the fuse, hope it will show that in the manual somewhere.
