I picked up my 2001 ML320 Saturday after the Volvo garage that I bought it from, after them sending it to mercedes for a warning light, apparently it had an electrical fault in the steering column that required the steering column being replaced costing them £700.

Forgetting that, I’m so so happy with the car just love it. Have a question though about the auto box. The car has 106000 miles on the clock, I am under the impression it has an oil for life box where the box is sealed, is this correct? If so I have heard it is good to get the oil in the box changed anyway, should I at this mileage change the oil and if so how much am I looking at spending.

Thanks for any advice!

Hello

I was told around 50K miles its time to change, costs at an indy around £120. If its been in for 106k then perhaps its time for change..

Glad you like it, just back in ours after towing our caravan 350 miles, great tow car !!

PS, post a pic.. :)

It may have been done if it is due at 50k, the servicing has all been done at Mercedes main dealer, all the book is nicely stamped with additional work done. The guy traded it in for a Volvo 4X4 3.0 petrol twin turbo for £40k, so looks like he didn't skimp on the servicing. I think I will change the auto box oil just to be safe.

I will post some pick, it's a 2001 pre face lift, looks very similar to yours silver paint with black leather interior. I was very happy as the Volvo dealer told me it has no cd player or auto changer. When I was checking the car at home for the jack etc found a 6 CD auto changer. Have only driven a little but am seriously impressed, but may not be so impressed with the fuel consumption sitting in London traffic :-) I will be happy if I can get 15mpg

Mine got 18 - 22mpg.... lol

18 to 22mpg would be excellent :)

Well worth changing the oil. When your car was built MB were saying sealed for life ( so may never have been done even by a fastidious owner)but more recently decided that changing every 40/50k or so is better. Lots of owners have found changing the oil makes a big difference.

I get more than 15mpg towing the above and loaded up.

Round town I reckon on 17-20mpg and on a run 25-28mpg

Thats working out from what I put in, not any on board computer.

Mine a ML350 but doubt much different than a 320?

Perhaps I just booted it more than you? :D

Nice car my mum has one...Thats the one in my profile lol...But in White imported from the states. Ive only seen one other white ML in London. Our one is 156,000 miles. Last thing that had problems was the Alternator. £400 quid to replace. They can go forever. Just keep servicing it annually.

You can change the oil. if theres no paper work for it in the near past. Auto boxes are delicate.

She wants to export it to Africa and get a saloon instead.

I get 26 mpg towing a very large horse trailer, but not with an ML!

Wifes old Ml320 averaged 17mpg and according to roof mpg jobby could get down to 7mpg:D

In the car manual it says 15.5mpg for city. My BMW 318i estate used to get 20-22mpg where I live so I expect a fair bit less. I will do a proper test filling up this weekend and then refilling next weekend and post the result.
Also going to ring a specialist for a quote for the Auto gearbox oil change.
