Pirelli Tyres lasting 10/15k miles?

It is a 300TD. It doesn't appear to have driven like a fool. I presume all were careful drivers.

I'm even more surprised now than previously.
My P6000 were toast on the rear of mine at 11k miles and no way will any tyres make 170k.

I assume you are not the only owner so don't know how many sets of tyres the car has really had.

I certainly wouldn't rate Pirelli's, one of mine had gone out of round and the tread was actually lifting off and they all wore unevenly and were noisy when worn down.

My last car was a b7 rs4 (audi) this ran on pirelli p zeros these were a soft compound and would last appx 10k a lot of owners changed to sesantas that were just o ver half the price of the p zeros and were found to last appx 15k but gave a harsher ride.

Oh man ! So much time wasted talking about tyres..pfew. Guys! C`mon!
I know one thing for sure: if my car has a user manual saying : Conti Sport then i`ll stick to them no matter what! Why Mercedes is not fittinf Pirelli ?? or Michelins ?? Coz their cars are designes with Contis.
Whats the point of buying cheap tyres for 10-15k...i`m saying all these coz i`m driving around 17k miles in UK and 20k miles in Europe per year...

:)

It does differ from car to car. My CLK55 came from the factory with Michelins, and that's what they datacard says :o

After 15 years and 170,000, my rear 2 tyres have only just got near the 3mm mark!

:D:D

Look at the side of the tyre try and find a little oblong this is the tyres manufacturere date for example (0404) April 1st 2004:)

When was the first 300td made?

Just replaced my rears today done 12k which i though was okay, heavy car plus some power.

Did they even stamp the date on tyres 15 years ago?
I'm surprised they still hold air in them. :)

DOT Codes and the 6-year shelf life

createtip.php
As part of the DOT code (G in the tyre marking above), there is a tyre manufacture date stamped on the sidewall. Take a look at yours - there will be a three- or four-digit code. This code denotes when the tyre was manufactured, and as a rule-of-thumb, you should never use tyres more than 6 years old. The rubber in tyres degrades over time, irrespective of whether the tyre is being used or not. When you get a tyre change, if you can, see if the tyre place will allow you to inspect the new tyres first. It's not uncommon for these shops to have stuff in stock which is more than 6 years old. The tyre might look brand new, but it will delaminate or have some other failure within weeks of being put on a vehicle.
Reading the code. The code is pretty simple. The three-digit code was used for tyres manufactured before 2000. So for example 1 7 6 means it was manufactured in the 17th week of 6th year of the decade. In this case it means 1986. For tyres manufactured in the 90's, the same code holds true but there is a little triangle after the DOT code. So for this example, a tyre manufactured in the 17th week of 1996 would have the code 176
minitriangle.gif

After 2000, the code was switched to a 4-digit code. Same rules apply, so for example 3 0 0 3 means the tyre was manufactured in the 30th week of 2003.

I actually thought it was 5 years but there you go.

Just had 2 new tyres fitted today and according to the date stamp they are already 2 years old:rolleyes:

Think it may also be something to do with the deal they get from the manufacturer....:D

That is almost as silly as a set of tyres doing 170,000 miles, are you & Reza neighbours?

If this is how you welcome new members, i think i'll keep away from here. I gave advice backed with my own experience. If that is 'silly' then i am in the wrong forum.

Hi Reza :)

This is a very friendly and welcoming forum, but unfortunately your post stating that you've covered over 170,000 miles on a set of tyres that are 15 years old and have over 3mm tread is just beyond belief.

It's nothing personal, and a couple of people have tried to suggest where the misunderstanding might be from.

Can you define " silly" ? :)
