Running at Vmax for extended periods can lead to significant engine failure, especially if there are pre-existing underlying problems.
Lobbing another similar engine (from a breakers), shouldn't be too expensive. However given the age and value of the car, and the trend away from legacy pre Euro6 diesels, fitting another engine may be waste of time and money.
