I am at my wits end because my 1992 300CE has now been in 3 garages (last one claims to be a specialist) and no one seems to be able to fix it. It originally went into the first garage to have a leaking coolant and cold starting problem looked at. They couldn't sort it so I picked it up and took it to another garage a few days later. During these 3 days, the car started to misfire and then not pull properly until it went above about 3000rpm. When it finally got to the second garage, it would only pull off when cold, otherwise it would start then cut out under load (as soon as you put it into drive). During its two weeks at the second garage, it got to the point where it wouldn't start at all. It has had a compression test which says all is fine, there is a spark on all cylinders and fuel is getting through! (Bizarre!). They suspect that the first garage fiddled irreprably with the fuel distribution system (?). Part of my problem is that I can't find a Merc specialist in Bristol. Found a guy in Shepton Mallet but he wanted £250 just to come and look at the car! I need to sell the vehicle and am prepared to spend up to a grand getting it sorted but no-one seems to know how (surely I could put a new engine in it for that!) Does anyone know a good specialist where I can take it and how I can get it there (not too far from Bristol)? Is it worth going back to the guy in Shepton?

Sounds like it needs a new dizzy cap.

A common fault which leads to stalling when the engine gets warm.

The Gibb Garage, Castle Combe 01249 782263?
Robert Lamb, Gloucester 01452 500808?

If you have breakdown cover and the car will get moving, you could set off in either direction and, if it fails, get taken to the garage.

Odd that MB specialists can't be found in a place the size of Bristol.

Thanks Roger

Is this someone you have used yourself or can recommend because you know of others who have?

Sorry for the long-delayed response; I've picked up your question from reviewing my recent posts.I haven't used these places, but they are both in the MB Club Good Garage Guide and I have seen posts from people who recommend them.
