Shucks fellas, many thanks to everyone for all the kind words - glad I'm not going to be expelled from here by virtue of buying yet another BMW (although at least at the next meet, instead of having to park by the skip, my car can act AS the skip!!)

Guy - thanks buddy! Not surprised you went for the E55 (eventually!!) - it's a fantastic motor, and one that I strongly considered instead of the X5, however I wanted something a bit higher off the ground for putting a baby-seat in (due to become a father in March next year  ), and after winter after winter of cursing RWD, fancied a 4WD for a change.

Take care of yourself, and happy motoring!

Richard - put my foot down twice, but not for too long!! Actually had it in the high 20's for a while, until traffic jams kicked in.....although after a bit of town driving today I can hold my head up in pride to be down at 20mpg, with further drops yet to come!! I managed to take a small number of pictures yesterday which I'll try and put up at the weekend, however reckon that was probably the last chance of it being clean before the summer! Will gladly take you for a spin at a meet sometime.....

I think in order to get that kind of status you'd also need to suggest ID cards and then sneak through a visa application for your ex-girlfriend's nanny

:D :D :D

Boot space isn't bad - isn't as long as a 5-series Tourer (the car is actually about 5 inches shorter), but reasonably tall, and a nice height to get stuff in and out (and you can sit on the tailgate bit when at the polo match, what-ho!)

Steve - nice idea, think I might get the BigFoot graphics for the side! :D It's got air suspension, so you can lift the car up a bit to clear the bumper of any pesky vehicle thats a bit higher than normal!!

Scott - like your style!! p.s. Hope you're still enjoying your Crossfire!

Sym - no worries, us BMW drivers know how to take the abuse and keep smiling!!

Thanks mate - really looking forward to it, but the M3 had to go!!!

Ed
Lovely motor, they rated it on Top Gear wise choice :) . I look forward to the ride on the MB club test track (though the roadhandling of the M3 will be missed) .

Cheers
Ian

Nice car...and a great colour.

Excellent choice Ed, I tried a facelift 3.0 X5 with the new X-Drive and it's much better!

Good to see you've kept the faith..... ;)

I'm so glad to see we all do as we're told - ie - "Please don't read this" :D

Ed - nice motor - sounds like you're already enjoying it :D Interesting how BMW seems a popular second choice after a Merc. Mmmm Z4

Just noticed you had joined the 4 x 4 brigade. Well done m8. Strange choice of car tho... ;)

No seriously it looks stunning.

Keep a watch out for Swampy and his tree huggin mates with thier minority vocals trying to get these cars sectioned...

looks like an excuse for a poll :D

New SLK vs Z4??

I vote SLK
However the new boxter is due out soon... now that is a tempting thought :D

Big Ed do not take this as a dig at the car but What Car really had a go at the new 4.8 engine said it was too powerful for the car, gave it low ratings but a friend of mine in the states has one and loves it just shows you can not believe everything you read. Sorry to all other Beemer drivers but you have what I think is the only acceptable model (X5) in the new BMW range (I have owned 8 BMWs in the past but its a long story) - nice colour.

Too powerful for the car ???

Surely they don't have a clue ...... can this ever be possible ??? ;)

Gary,

no problem at all with you mentioning this - I had read the same review myself before buying the car (they gave it 1 out of 5!!! ), however I still liked the car enough to buy it on the basis of my own test drive experiences.

Completely agree with you about not trusting what you read - I really have lost all faith in car reviews (although I would never have bought either of my Mercs if I went by the reviews - the E36 3 Series + Passat were supposed to be better!). Totally appreciate that the X5 isn't for everyone - XC90 carries people better, Touareg/Disco/ML are better offroad (although after attending an X5 offroad day, don't believe what you read about these things not working well offroad!), but it suits me very nicely....

And Sym is right - too much power? impossible!

Thanks again folks!

Test drives available to all at the next meet (although I can't promise as much sideways action as the M3 offered)

Mark - you started the trend, mate! Hope you're still enoying the Touareg - lovely car, and I was seriously tempted by one, but it just wouldn't fit in the garage which meant I had to discount it.....

Z4 vs SLK? I am one that actually likes the Z4, but agree with many about the new 5 / 7 Series designs leaving a lot to be desired. However, I do think the SLK is a more classy car, although not as sporty as the Z4, however the SLK is in my eyes the better looking option. Either way, both are a very nice option!

I like the Z4 - think it looks great - not so sure of the interior though. Like the thought of the 8 second roof  but it would mean going back to a rag top and that's what's so special about the SLK. I'm prob going to ponder this one for a long time coz at the end of the day - I still love my SLK. :p

I bought a set of speakers once and the only fault listed in the reviews was "too much bass".

Same thing? :)

Although What Car state that the X5 4.8 has too much power in fact they contradict themselves by saying the engine is the car saving grace and its the ride which is what they really dont like, the article was written by someone whos initials are AS, seems they missed out another S at the end.
