Had a good go at my tips today and whilst they're a lot shinier, the chrome has cracked ina few places and could well do with being rechromed.

I see that the tips appear to be welded to the silencer exhaust pipe. Is it a relatively easy job to remove them ? I could then get them sent away and rechromed to as new.

Anyone tried this or can offer any advice ? they're the only thing lettig down my otherwise perfect CL55K !

Cheers

I had the same problem, but instead of re-chroming etc, I just painted them satin black and to be honest I think they actually look better. Good luck

Those are nice - didn't know you could buy the tips on their own.

The main thing is not to let them get dirty/corroded in the first place. I'm probably a bit weird but rather like cleaning them :o

Only takes a couple of mins.

Not wierd at all Bill, I'm going to be cleaning the tips on my new SS exhaust all the time!:o

I too, sadly, clean the chrome tips on my Saab - nice finishing touch IMO

The perfect way to make your exhausts back to brand new is purchase this polish for taking the scratches and oxidation's out:

Briliant Zeppelin Metal Prep | Briliant Car Care & Detailing Products

And then this polish for refining the finish back to being shiny and new!

Briliant Zeppelin Mirror Finish | Briliant Car Care & Detailing Products

If you want to make sure it looks perfect then use a hand held rotary tool like this:

Dremel 300 Series Multi Tool 240v : Tooled-Up.com

To really polish them up with.

Also if you have a new exhaust or your exhaust is in the best condition, and you would like to keep it that way, then purchase yourself a pot of this:

Products - Serious Performance

Its the perfect paste wax ever for sealing, to keep the exhaust in tip top condition as nothing will be able to damage the pipe i.e. fumes, salt, grit and contamination's.What makes this so effective is the fact that fk1000p is heat proof 250+ degrees so it'll last good on a hot exhaust.

The best way for aplication is rub on the exhaust and leave to cure for 30-45 mins, then leave for 10-24 hours and repeat the process. Two coats of this will be good for 6-8 months solid protection.

Hope that helps!

The car is going into Merc next week to have the ABC pump and belts all changed (hooray for the warranty !!) so I've asked them to have a look at the exhaust tips whilst it's on the ramps and see if they're easy to remove.

I shall report back in due course.

Is that with the MB garage that looked after the car when you bought the car ? You have done well with your Warranty .

That has been my biggest concern to do with the CL, well done having a MB Warranty Johnny.

Hi Pedro - I took up a Warranty Direct warranty last year. £50 per month on a rolling monthly basis (Extra Care with COMAND covered). WD came out to inspect the car on thursday at Merc Liverpool and have approved all the work apart from replacing the belts which are a wearable item and I'm not too bothered about that cost.

There's a couple of minor oil leaks from the pilot bushes (whatever they are !) so Merc are going to do those for me as well, for an hrs labour instead of two as it'll be up on the ramps.

First claim with WD and very impressed so far, although I'm aware others have had issues with 3rd party warranty co's.

Car's still incredible - it's a million miles from the car you looked at originally, so if you're ever up Wirral way feel free to pop in and I'll take you for a spin !
