After reading about pollen filters on another thread my question is...

Are they necessary? Will the heater/aircon still work perfectly well without one?

If one isn't at all susceptible to pollen why bother, cars didn't used to be fitted with them. Are they just another fad and a way for the spares dept to make money?

If nothing else at least it keeps the air ducts free of muck?

I've just removed my pollen filter and with the amount of muck that was in the filter [I don't mean dust] I would never leave it out!!!!

Yep - think of it as an air filter for the cabin. Certainly not a bad idea IMHO, keeps the cabin air cleaner and fresher and stops the other much from getting into the rest of the vents etc.

Does anyone remember on older cars (190Es, 124s) how when you occasionally *really* gave them the beans (!) how you'd get some debris come out of the vents? Little bits of leaves, dust, bonnet insulation, flies etc - don't see that on the newer cars with these filters ;)

whats the difference between pollen filter and cabin filter

After some thinking I have just refilled one of those expensive charcoal filters how easy it was !!! I could do it every year. I will still buy the dust and pollen one though you can only wash them out so many times.

If you have climate control the button on your control panel with the two right pointing arrows sends air through an activated charcoal filter to remove traffic fumes etc.
The other filters remove the dust and pollen.

Anyone with a fish tank knows just how cheap activated carbon can be bought for .....

The idea came from gas masks with as you say activated charcoal, like fish pond filter charcoal just a different grade, the activated charcoal filters for a climate control equipped car are nearer £100 the pair from MB, someone will give the correct figure I am sure.

How often should you change them?

To that you should ask how often do you use it ? the charcoal gets exhausted but its not possible to tell by looking so you end up with an arbitary replacement schedule.
Mine got done on that basis, every couple of years seems reasonable but not scientific.
